Hi, I'm sure this has been done, and discussed but can't find any information on it. I have a 1989 GTA and I'm in the process of installing my audio system, I'm fairly sure I am going to install a second battery but do not want to place the battery in the rear of the car. I know the air cleaner and vaper canister can be removed and there is already a battery tray under them for the second battery. I'm not sure where to relocate the air filter, I know I can get a K&N setup right on the TPI unit. Is there anyone here who has placed a second battery on the passenger side of the engine bay?

I ran a second battery when I competed in car audio many moons ago. The canister can be moved and secured right beside the second battery.

If you want to keep the ram air effect of the TA you could go real cheap and use aluminium dryer ducting to reroute the air filter below the battery tray. OR you could make a template out of dryer duct and have a muffler shop rebend it with 3" exhaust tubing.

 

A Second battery is a cool idea. If you use a marine type i think you can put inside car, however a 1 Farad (or even .5) capacitor will deliver high amounts of current, quickly as needed and can be mounted close to the amps so there is less wire involved, shortening that time it takes to get power to the amp. You'll get that punch you're looking for. Update the alternator and the baddest battery in the stock place and won't have to worry bout other mods. Be careful with install cause the capacitor needs to be discharged first if they're not shorted while in storage.

 

Look at the Optima yellow or Blue top batteries and don't forget you'll need an isolator as well if you run two batteries.

Ummm.....that's not what a capacitor does. A capacitor has limited advantages. 99% of the time they are just a waste of money.

 

I should have asked and not assume... What is the purpose of the second battery? If you are trying to achieve clarity and higher definition of sound, a farad capacitor is a viable option. If you just need power power power, to supply to the amps and you're strobing out oncoming traffic with your headlights.. you are deaf. hehe. Buy good speakers that are efficient and high power class A amps and you are golden. (proper wiring of course)

lol really a class A amp? efficiency and class A dont go together. im sure you meant class D

 

Class A amps are the LEAST efficient amps. And also capacitors do almost Nil in regards to helping you out unless you have almost no voltage drops. Caps are best used in sound quality installs to help clean up the peak signal.

Also when adding a second battery it's also important to have an upgraded alternator. Stock alts aren't going to like trying to charge two batteries.
