Do our stock headunits REALLY suck this bad?
So here it is... My moms 2004 mitsu raider with the stock radio sounds SICK...
My 96 bronco with a crappy aftermarket JVC is pretty good... but not nearly as nice as the raider radio.
Finally my 1992 camaro with the stock cassette radio.
I get HORRIBLE radio reception. I live kinda far out here in alaska, but the raider's radio gets damn near perfect reception.
My question is, do all our radios have pretty shitty radio reception, or do i have some crazy bad antenna?
I wanna by some new JL audio speakers I've been eyeing... but there just gonna be useless with all my radio static... I think I'm gonna need a new radio

Two things: Your compareing a radio made in 92 to one made in 04?
Secondly who listens to the Radio for a constant flow of music?
Get some CD's or in this case get a tape. The stock radio's arent bad. My old delco cd player from a newer one sounded really good with some aftermarket speakers. Even the factory decks sound decent with a good tape.

What does a headunit have to do with recieveing radio station? That's the job of the antenna. I'd make sure all your antenna wiring is hooked up right and not broken...

there might be something wrong with your radio or
antenna-thirdgen era delco radios are usually very good
if you have one in good order(they are prone to bad
solder joints)Actually one of the best head units i have
ever heard is the delco('84 delco bose, hooked to a 400+
watt old skool system)in my z28-its way better than the
alpines and pioneers,2000 and 2004 vintage that came
in my dad's trucks, better than the factory system in my
brother's 2006 jeep.

Whats radio? For real you obviously have a computer, throw in a cheap memory card reader,mp3 player or ipod and download like a gazillion songs...who listens to the radio anymore? I got Sirius and rarely listen to that...with all the media sources now days the last thing I would even want to listen to is some crappy sounding FM broadcast.

When I bought my 1989 Formula brand-new, one of the first things I did was replace the factory speakers with some Infinitys. The factory head-unit sounded pretty good through those speakers and the FM reception was great.
My current Formula has an Alpine H/U and Memphis speakers and sounds great on CD, but marginal on FM.

I like the radio, they play a wider variety of songs than I can download and often play stuff I don't have or have forgotten about. Plus Omelette and Finster in the morning cracks me up.

Who listens to the radio anymore? How about anybody who wants a wide variety of music? Anyone who wants to hear the latest singles, or those songs you've forgotten about? And then there's remixes too

Re: Do our stock headunits REALLY suck this bad?
i have an 87 ws6 with the original "performance sound" head unit, it has an analog equalizer that works pretty good, and the thing doesnt sound too bad with some aftermarket speakers. it sounds pretty decent actually. only bad thing is it only has a radio and tape deck (which i expect because it was made in.. 1987..) but to hook up an mp3 player or something i need to either get one of those crappy tape things or use an fm transmitter, neither of which have great sound quality. i mean i could hardwire it into the tape input inside the headunit, but that just takes lots of time and patience, and idk how easy these units are to "operate on" like that. plus sometimes they are a real pain to get apart. hey, idk but i dont think they are really that bad sounding
