Think these would work in the 6x9 area?

I'm wanting to add bass to the car, since it's seriously lacking. I don't need a whole ton, just some nice sound quality. I've heard of people sticking 8's and even 10's where the factory 6x9's are. Do you think that these JL 6W3's will work in place of the 6x9's? http://mobile.jlaudio.com/products_s...p?series_id=29 I'm also going to run JL C2 6.75 components in the doors when I make some custom door panels, as well as a JL XD400/4-ch amplifier powering both the components and the 6.5" subwoofers.

These subwoofers are free-air, so I would think they would work pretty well in the 6x9 area. What do you guys think?

They are an excellent mid-woofer, I've used them in some tight spaces, including under the seat of some cars. Even though they are a "free-air" design, I still recommend some sort of baffling, and would strongly urge you to use some sound-deadning material in that area to avoid unwanted resonance. Good luck!

sub in the sail panels always sound terrible. bad time alignment R/L, and closer to you than the mids/highs. one of them is ALOT closer. gross.

nice speaker though, however with an spl / efficiency of 80.49 dB SPL, you will need
about 300 good watts apiece to get good sound and volume from them.

I have built a few thirdgens with 8" subs in the sail area and thought they sounded pretty good with correct imaging, however they were HIGH-END installs, heavy on the signal processing.

I favor audiocontrol. My favorite one used a pioneer deq9200 and two audiocontrol eqt's running through an alpine v-12 2channel amp to a pair of infinity 8's mounted in the sail panel running stereo-mono. This was a competition car that used two 12w7's and an alpine amp for actual bass. it had 2 6 1/2 infinity mids and 2 1" tweeters in each door mounted in custom made door panels. Sounded really good, but a little bass-heavy in my opinion.

Oh! BTW, that car was beaten by both Ritchard Navones(SP) Buick Grand national and Patrick Gates PPI Bronco.

The 6.5's will work but if you are not going to run a sub in the rear then I personally I would go with 8's in the sail panel. I've done this before and it sounds pretty good.

thats Al Hasse's 8 in build, i cut his panels but hes sealing off the entire area to make a box for it pretty much, free air wont sound as good and youre gonna need to dynamat the CRAP out of it

They sound pretty decent, too. I had to trim those panels down quite a bit to make them just fit over the 6X9 hole (I just needed the 8" hole cut as I don't own a jigsaw - thanks Blu). I used the metal mounting plate the 6X9 speakers were mounted on as a template.

My amp isn't feeding them near as much as they can handle (only 60 WRMS each), but to me, they do just fine. I'm not the guy who needs bone-jarring bass, but like the fuller sound with low frequency. I can do bone-jarring in my 92 with 1100 WRMS from a Memphis Big Belle to a single 12" Memphis MOJO, but I rarely play it that loud.

Depends on your budget and listening preference. Do you prefer a detailed or laid back sound.

Listen to a few different types of speakers and then decide.

There is no one simple answer. Speaker choice is very subjective.
