Representing 3rd Gens On Power Tour 2011

Well I felt the need to give a shout out to you guys. There is no general section on the board so this area seems somewhat appropriate. My GTA got selected for the Pioneer display on Power Tour. I have about 11 years in it and all of them have been on this board. Its been a fun, long road but it is cool to get some notification. They will be installing a full blown system in my car. Unofficially it may happen at Indy. They are sending the paper work and release forms later this week so my car can be used in their advertising. I did not think I would be so pumped about something other than speed parts, but hey I will take what I can get:-)

They asked me to get rid of the skull shifter, no big deal I will put it on the shelf for a while for some hot rod glory.

It really is nice. Is that the original red? Looks a little brighter. Like I said very nice.

Re: Representing 3rd Gens On Power Tour 2011

Unfortunately that is not the original red. It is the original color tunned up with some pearl and candy apple. The car was a little sad on the outside when I bought it in 2001. On of the first mods was to overhaul the body work. My painter budy talked me into these enhancements. I think he was right, it is subtle but pops all at the same time.

Thanks guys!

Re: Representing 3rd Gens On Power Tour 2011

Wow Dave,
Love those wheels, love the color, and yeah, I hate the skull... But congratulations on the Pioneer gig! Power tour..... I would love to do power tour someday. I see you've got a T56 in there. I'm hittin' 12.40's @ 114 MPH quarter mile speeds, plus 23 MPG on the highway with my T56 and the minirammed 385... have you tracked your mileage? It's like having the best of both worlds, these T56's.

Re: Representing 3rd Gens On Power Tour 2011

Yea I was knocking down 24mpg last year on PT, but that was with the stock 3.23's. This year I have a Ford 9" with 3.70s so we will see. I ordered a new Pontiac shifter that may be in better taste. It should be a fun trip.

heres a vid of it running. Never mind the rattling in the road, I was a genious (not!) and bought a six puck clutch. Man there is no slip!

Not sure. If they ask me too I will, but right now my crew and I are planning on picking it up in Nashville as my dad only live 30 miles away. Give us a good way point to fix wash cars and get a free nights board. We did the whole thing last year and it was hard on the cars my old man, and the pocket book. It was suppose to be two stops this year but we keep finding cool things to do.:-)

The Tour is nothing less than the HOT ROD POWER TOUR! Did it in 1998 2001 2004 2007 2008 2009 2010 and coming soon 2011!

Ah, now I know what your car looks like. I saw it last year at the beginning of the HRPT. I have a few pics of it. Beautiful car! I'll most likely see you there, as the GF and I are taking my T/A on the Long Haul.

Re: Representing 3rd Gens On Power Tour 2011

I'll be Power Touring from Nashville to Detroit. I had an excellent 383, but it basically digested the main bearings about 2 months ago so I've currently got a "replacement" 355 installed. The 355 runs great, but man I miss the torque of the 383. Its really not even close, and the 355 I'm running now is an excellent engine. 10:1, hyd roller, Dart Pro 1 200cc heads, etc.

Anyway, I'll keep an eye out for you at Indy. Here's a pic of my ride, I don't expect to see many 3rd gens on the tour.

Yea maybe on of the stops we can all park together or something. I like seeing other Thirdgens. I only saw a hand full last year. And I believe only 2 or 3 made the long haul.

We have a panoramic picture from the top of the bleachers of all the cars at the drivers meeting in Newton on Sunday morning, knowing most people dont go to the drivers meetings there were still 9 thirdgens we counted in the pic.

Not sure how far I'm going, but the IROC-Z is a definite in Cocoa. I haven't decided if I want to drive the car to Indy and rack up 2k miles on the car or go to Cocoa with the IROC and drive my truck to Indy and save the miles. With all of the bad weather going thru the middle of the country, I would prefer the truck. Looking forward to the trip and already have the hotels booked!

Re: Representing 3rd Gens On Power Tour 2011

Put 2800 miles on the GTA last year. It came out OK. The worst part was the drive home from Mobile. I got sleepy and, got to close to other cars and got some rock chips. It was frustrating because we were almost home and I had completed most of the tour without hardly a mark.

Yo Dave, I'm almost to Chattanooga and will be in Florida by the end of the night. My number is 218-260-6016. Name is Brodie. You should text me when you get to Cocoa Beach and we'll get a third gen group going!

Re: Representing 3rd Gens On Power Tour 2011

Ok, I must have misread something...you said you weren't sure if you were going to Cocoa Beach. So far I've seen quite a few 3rd gen Camaros, but only one other Firebird...it's black with orange stripes and orange graphics on the sides. Lots and lots of bad-*** cars though! They were installing a system in a '70 Chevelle SS at the Pioneer stand when I went there earlier today. I really wish I had seen that post sooner...otherwise I would have signed up! Good luck, and not sure when, but I'll see ya around bud!

Edit: Look for this car and let me know when you're around.

Re: Representing 3rd Gens On Power Tour 2011

I parked in a lot today next to ragroc. When I arrived, there was a gorgeous red GTA next to me. When I left, there was a black and silver 3rd gen. They were setting up a canopy in the parking lot. I arrived about 2 and they were getting ready to listen to the Pioneer'd Chevelle when I got to their booth. My son and I wore our TGO tshirts today, but nobody stopped us. Oh well. I'll be meeting up with the group in Gainesville. I came home for the night and it's closer for me to head to Don Garlits museum from my home than from Cocoa. Hopefully we'll see others on the road.

Saw you today also and I saw your car at Ron Jons in Cocoa beach! Very nice and good luck with the differential! Had that issue in 2009!

Re: Representing 3rd Gens On Power Tour 2011

I think the differential issue Brodie is having can be resolved using GM posi additive. I've heard others say that the GM stuff is the only stuff to use. I've even heard mechanics say that, so that's all I've ever used. Something else I was told is that if you use 1 bottle and it doesn't stop the chatter, add a second bottle. Brodie's not using the GM stuff, but it will probably change.

Saw you drive past today when we exited for Subway. We were cruising to Nashville via 65, not the tour route and my son needed food. We were hoping you'd pull over with us, but....

We're going to Indy and then heading back home to FL. If the car makes it that is! I've not had good luck. My sway bar bushings deteriorated in Alabama, 5 miles from the track, my alternator crashed and my newly R12 recharged AC died in GA. It's been very warm driving and with the extreme heat, it isn't helping. I thought all issues were resolved when today the car died on the way to the hotel. It just shut off. I was able to restart it, but I don't know why it died. Hopefully I can get to Indy!!!

Sounds like the rear problem isn't too bad, which is good. We lost the rear on our first PT, which was 2009. Made it all the way out to Wisconsin from Delaware, then turned right around and came home.

I thought about stopping when I saw you guys, but I had the 5.0 with me and we were meeting a childhood friend in Franklin for lunch and the going on with him to PT. Ironically, his car broke down 5 minutes from the house.

Sounds like you have your hands full! This trip is brutal normally but even worse with the heat. This is my third attempt and I drive my car every nice day we have. First year the rear went and the second I had the exact same problem you did with the shut off. Mine ended up being the fuel pump. I kept it full mostly and was able to make it home. We will be at Indy for just a little while because of the heat so hopefully we can catch up as I'd love to see your car.

I haven't been on the Power Tour, but I've stopped at a couple of places in the last few years... Tallahassee FL and Orlando FL.... I hope to someday drive the whole week, but my car is years away from completion and so is my bank account Have a blast, enjoy the Pioneer stuff and the other sweet rides & great people along the way...

Hey Brodie it was fun meeting you and your girl. I wish I could convince my wife to go. This Power Tour was a little more trying than those in the past. Got snarled in traffic for 10 hours had car problems, and my frineds had car problems. So everything was a little rushed. It was cool doing the Pioneer thing. Got to be in the vendor area for parking.

Saw Scotts car and my Jaw dropped! That car is CLEAN! I was jelous. Saw a couple other thirdgens that were outstanding to that made me feel insufficent :-) Brodie your car had me thinking I need the older body style it looked good man!

Re: Representing 3rd Gens On Power Tour 2011

Good meeting you Dave and Brodie. Dave, the car looks really good and sounds healthy! try convincing Brodie to keep his. He's actually thinking of upgrading to the newer style. I've been a fan of the Camaro more so than the Firebird, but the ground effect cars look really good. I also have a desire to own a Formula, but the white and gray combo looks great on this car.

Oh, and now the car is clean!! I washed and waxed it last night and it looks good again except for the major stone chip in the hood! Between the dust and bugs, it was really hard keeping it clean on this trip. It was worse Thursday after the Indy rain.

Re: Representing 3rd Gens On Power Tour 2011

Yea I here ya. Power Tour is one of those comprimises. It can be a hard pill to swallow. There are somedays you just feel like you are demolishing your car. My car had been a garage quen for 5 years before its first power tour. I was going to make every inch perfect. Then I realized i was missing out on all the fu with my friends and family. I put it together and realized I can work on it while I drive it and have more fun. I also get better ideas looking at cars like yours and brodies when I am out having fun.

I get made fun of in my group for alway washing and detailing, but hey I feel your pain I want my car clean man! THey don't understand its hard to get respect in a thirdgen if it is grungy :-) My paint was in pretty good shape 2 years ago, but these cars are like rock hoovers on the road. even following behind at 40 yards I still have some doozies on the front end. I figure at some point I will have to make a visit to the body shop. All in all its worth it.

Also not all Power Tours have had this grueling of a route. Last year there were some legs that were down right some of the best driving I have ever had racetrack or not. Those are the days you are supper happy your car is out of the shed. Nothing like hearing the bird scream through the smokey mountian roads with the cutouts open man!

Hey guys,

Scott, sorry I never got to meet up with you! I tried at Indy, but we got there late and I just couldn't find your car. Maybe another time, but from what I saw on the road your car is gorgeous!

Dave, even though it was only for a minute, it was great to meet you and you have an awesome car! Enjoy that stereo and its good to see third gens getting attention!

Brodie, I didn't get to meet you but your car is beautiful too as I saw it a number of times!

Rumblin70SS were you the guy that leaned in the window as I was pulling out. I thought that was Scott, but after all day in the heat, adn acting like the guys thrashing around in my car did not bother me, I was a little scattere brained :-) Not to mention there was a crap load of people to manuever through and a 6 puck clutch does not lend itself to slow manuevering.

THere was another Thirdgen that got a stereo but that guy does not seem to be on here. I will get some picks up. also Pioneer has some stuff posted. The system turned out nice. I jammed all the way home after I tuned it for a 35 year old guy and not a 16 year old guy :-)

Dave, I was the guy that came up with my friend after you parked in the grass at Muskegon. You had just opened the hood and stated you were having a tough day with idle problems and such. I hope I was not rude as the heat had taken a toll on all of us in the last few days!

I saw the early 90's blue Z28 that got the stereo too. His plate license plate was 'meowmix' if anyone knows the car. Think it had a miniram on it too.

Dave, I'm the one that leaned in the car as you were leaving. I had just gotten to Indy after sitting on I65 for over 2 hours. Unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to walk around and look at any cars in Indy. Oh well. It was definitely an adventure.

Tony, maybe another time. I'll put the pictures online and let you know where to download them once I get that done.

No you were fine Rumblin. Sounds like I had the same day Scott did getting to Indy, but it was Muskegon. Sounds like I missed the one of the best stops of all time. I was just totally smoked after being in traffic for 5 hours and driving a clutch. The car was tired I was tired and there was mass dissapointment amoungst my group cause we were looking forward to Muskegon.

If I came off rude, I am sorry.

Thanks Scott! I65 was a BEAR! We stopped at the rest stop right before it and I swapped places with my friends girlfriend and let her and my fiancee take the IROC. I was worried to death it was going to overheat in all that traffic but she knew enough to cut the air and roll the windows down. Underdrive pullies and 100 degree temps don't go well together!

Not at all Dave, you were very nice. I might not have been so good after all of that! They need to shorten the stops......we had a tough time getting there on time to enjoy what was going on and thats no fun.

You guys have beautiful cars! Now I need to start working on mine!

Anyone going next year?

Laura and I were talking about next year...it's starting in Detroit and ending in Texas. I don't think we'll do the whole thing next year, but we'll most likely be doing half or so. Whether the 'Bird will be on the Tour, that's not for certain.

At the top, very nice ride but don't care for the interior color, depends on personal choice I guess

Re: Representing 3rd Gens On Power Tour 2011

That was more than enough for me. The car sees regular track time so I do not want it to be a jukebox. I plan on putting disconnects on the box for when I go racing. The single sub overpowers the speakers as it is. i had to turn it all the way down to get it to blend, and sound natural. When I first got the car the bas was making all kinds of exagerated sounds. Call me old I guess.

Actually I used it quiet a bit in Nashville and Indy, and then when it was raining. The switch you gave me came in very handy. I could actually sit there and idle without a problem finally.

Dave,

I like that!

We have a 1974 roadster that has been in the family since 1975 with only 65k on it.......it does need some work but we were thinking if I get it done in time to bring it on the tour. It's a real 70's ride though with Thrush sidepipes, black laquer paint and **** carpet

How does the stereo sound? I'd assume it would be pretty good acoustically since Pioneer is using it as a promotional vehicle.

I see you mentioned the track too.....whats the car run?
