Re: Speaker sizes?

With a dremil and some hacking 6x9s will fit

though many don't like that, what more important, good sound or parts you will never see hacked up hidden under the dash pad.

Re: Speaker sizes?

And some 4x6 speakers have a rather large magnet that can be difficult to install the dash pad back on. Usually the left dash speaker will have clearance issues due to the gauge clusters.

think you meant 6x9 and yes they got big magnets, that can limit your choice.

went with mid sized 2 coil pioneere 100watt ones, not a big fancy double stacked looking magnet of more powerful ones. But you get the speaker area you need for some thump.

just had to notch the back of the gauge cluster and some duct work, very do-able, just take your time to do it right.

Then some monster 6x9s in the a-pilar and your rocking with a good head unit. [I went with some 300watt 3 coil boston-acustics [had em already]]

Any Pioneere DEH searies will rock

Re: Speaker sizes?

No, I meant the dash 4x6's which I took out my old Jensen's and replaced them with Infinity Kappa's not that long ago.

I also replaced the ones in the sail panels with 6x9 Infinity Kappa's and hooked it all up to the existing Delco Bose with Monster audio cable. Wicked loud and clear now.

Tried to run 4x6 JBL GTO's in my Trans Am.

Pass side fit great , drivers side not even close .

Had to go with a 3" home driver and tweeter.

Re: Speaker sizes?

Do any of you guys know a pair of speakers that will fit a firebird without having to hack up any ducts? I heard Alpine S-types 4" fit?

Re: Speaker sizes?

easy way out is just a set if tweeters mounted up front and forget the dash speakers.

Re: Speaker sizes?

The only thing that I wasn't able to do was screw the retaining speaker ring to the dash. I removed a little bit of foam from under the dash pad and carefully lowered on top of the speaker making sure that the pad didn't slide the speaker out of place. No air ducts or clusters were touched by a hack saw or other tool.

My dash pad bolted right up, speaker doesn't shift out of place and there isn't enough stress on the dash pad to even crack it.

Really wish there were just a pair of decent speakers that fit in there. I already grinded the **** out of some plastic under my dash - but i haven't touched the vents - and dont want to.

Re: Speaker sizes?

I bought some Sony xplode 4X6 speakers for $38. The magnet on them is smaller than the infinites i took out. All BS aside, sound quality on the two is negligible for me. The sony's fit much, much better. If i dont use the plate, they're practically flush.

Looking forward to NOT cracking my new dashboard because of oversized speakers.

hench tweeters in a windshield pillar pod.

helps set the stage.

grab something like this and put one on each side but with a tweeter.

Re: Speaker sizes?

Do the gauge pillars fit on the passenger side. I guess what I mean is.....is there a passenger side pod or is the single pod fit either side?

That would image terribly.

A tweeter facing so directly rearward would be very over powering on the side that the person is sitting on.

The best budget, "just want to listen to some decent tunes" way to get a decent sound from the front is to put some good 4x6s in the dash. The speakers are far enough forward, that the imaging is decent even without trying to angle tweeters to improve on it.

Re: Speaker sizes?

I have a convertible, so I have 6.5" in the back a little lower than the 6x9 in the hard top cars. I'm also planning on putting a couple small subs on the hump area. Should I stick with 4x6 under the dash, or go with something like 6.5 two-way in the doors or 5.25 two-way in the kick panels or what? What will give me the best sound quality?

Re: Speaker sizes?

My setup has worked great.

Sony 4X6's up front
Pioneer 6X9's in the back
Infinity Basslink Dual 10" Powered Sub tucked away in the spare area.
Alpine X305S head unit

More than enough for the casual listener. I'm not trying to win any competitions here.
