Need to replace stock speakers
I'm a bit confused. I know I have the performance sound with the gain switch and all that. Pretty sure it has to be 4x6 in the rear and 5'' sub. What's a good replacement speaker for both sides (trying to keep it 4x6 tho, no hacking away for me) Plus, do the old connectors fit with the new speakers or do i have to solder something ?

Re: Need to replace stock speakers
yeah, I'm confused. I opened up the dash top and I have a pair of nice new Pioneer 4x6 and they don't do anything like fit. The speakers in there seem to be set in a plastic panel but my Pioneers won't fit in them, nor will they fit the hole when the plate thing is removed. Also the connectors on the dash loom don't fit the speakers and one one side its too short to reach anyway.
I wondered if there was a fitting kit to put aftermarket speakers in the dash top? I read some guys install larger speakers in there, I have a set of 5x7 Kickers I would use if they can go in.
I just want something that sounds OK, no kidding all the stock speakers in my car are blown!
its an '87 or '88 Trans Am GTA with the digital dash.
Any help would be great

Re: Need to replace stock speakers
the birds are a little tighter on clearances than the camaros when it comes to dash speakers. you could use a heat gun to warm up the vent and mold it a bit more out of the way. the plates can sometimes help since the mid magnet is offset. I'm not much of a fan of trying to wrestle with the small speaker in the confined stock spots, so I opted for components in the kickpanels. Much better sound and many more speaker options (although a bit more pricey)

Re: Need to replace stock speakers
I'm not really into cutting up my car. Do the new speakers fit the old connectors or do you have to buy some sort of adapter for the stock wires?
Re: Need to replace stock speakers
i just got done replacing my front speakers in my 84 camaro with Dimond 4" rounds. they came with adapters fo the 4x6 and bolted right in. they sound great and there is no visual difference or cutting involved. depending on the quality you get the vary in price. i got my pair for about $110.00
Re: Need to replace stock speakers
stock wiring worked with them too. a little cutting and stripping of wires was involved as the new speakers had different contact points. but it was a relatively quick and easy job. just make sure to ask the store clerk for a wiring schematic. saves you a bunch of headaches

Just try to find some 4x6's with small magnets. The driver side is much tighter than the passenger side

Re: Need to replace stock speakers
My replacement from speakers had a larger magnet, and it was hitting the vent. I used a heat gun to mold them to the magnet just like 1adan sugested.
The rear speakers I keep the 6x9 size but what i did was remove the fiberglass form around the speaker and used it to build a custom box out of MDF. I built them as close to the speaker spec's as I could. They now sound amazing. I made a custom cross over with some caps I had laying around so my from speakers give me mostly highs and mids.
Oh and I added a custom 10" sub and box in the rear where the rear storage box was. The factory box was so deformed from water damage was usless anyway.

Re: Need to replace stock speakers
My stock dash speakers will have to do for now (I don't have that much money) Right now I can only replace to the two 4x6's in the back. I don't even know if the subs are blown too. Here's a video clip of when I first got my car started. This was with the volume up all the way. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pOhjbtO6TNE

Re: Need to replace stock speakers
The performance sound has 6 speakers. Two 4x6's in the dash. Two 4x6's in the rear and two 5 inch subs that are controlled thru a gain switch which activates an amp. If you still have the stock enclosure you should have like cotton and a "tuned" port tube. This pushes the bass out. Very good sound system even by todays standards. The only problem is no-one makes 5 inch subs anymore. The closest for example is tanband which make 6.5

Re: Need to replace stock speakers
A sony explode 4x6 will work great, but make sure you don't over load the RMS rating on the speaker. And before y'all bash me about them being sony I have four of them in my gmc with a 10" sub and they sound great. But if you don't like sony go to www.sonicelectronix.com and they have good selection of speakers, subs, head units and more for alot better prices than any other place I have seen. A 4X6 should fit front just double check mounting deep.

Re: Need to replace stock speakers
I doubt you'll be able to run different subs on the amp and headunit. Bose made it difficult for anyone to use different speakers. You can try though. If you don't have restrictions see if it works. I've heard that it doesn't. I personally don't like to change around wiring and stuff from stock but, if it's done already then you might as well finish it

Re: Need to replace stock speakers
I've been able to find 1 company that makes 5.25 subs (JL or JBL....), but they are $150 a pair. Stupid expensive if you ask me.
I have been able to find a few 5.25 midwoofers that should work. I've never heard one used as a sub, just a 6.5 woofer, but it SHOULD sound just fine for a nice full sound
http://www.parts-express.com/pe/show...D=gtwbjlqym6bw
They are 8 ohm but could be wired to 4 ohm

Oh, and make sure and check out the power/RMS rating of any 5.25 woofer. Most are very weak....

I like the boston acoustics, my dads 2012 chally has them. Just not sure the stock amp is going to work with them.

I went with Alpine in the front & rear and 2-JL subs w/1000 watt amp. sound terrific. You can get Boston Acoustic or Infinity and won.t get hurt as well. God luck.

Probably buying an 1989 Formula Firebird tomorrow, because I blew my Bronco up and my Bronco has brand new 6.5 and 6.8 speakers. I don't know how many speakers a Firebird has but will these fit?

I had Polk 4x6s up front, but popped one. Soooo I replaced them with some Memphis Audio 4x6s. Both sets fit no problem and sound pretty good for what they are...

Do you have the model #? If they are cheaper than the oem speakers I'll get those. As long as it fits and has good sound

Re: Need to replace stock speakers
Nice speakers, is there a specific site you buy them from?
Re: Need to replace stock speakers
Are you lucky I have a folder of receipts of nearly every $ I've spent on my Camaro. I bought Pioneer TS 4602 4x6 speakers for the front dash on my '86Z at now defunct Circuit City for $69.97. I replaced the rear speakers at some point, too but those details are not on this particular receipt. I don't remember what the rear ones are and I must have done that at a different time. I'd have to take off the panel to get to them.
Re: Need to replace stock speakers
The rear speakers are Acoustic HS-892 Hz Shaper dual bass and tweeter with 20 oz. strontium magnet. I'm glad I looked at this because the cone is dry rotted. Ouch! So I guess it's a trip to the car stereo store for some new ones. Time to upgrade any way.

I'm lucky in everything but women. I'll shop around for the models suggested from you guys. I don't have the luxury of affording anything worthwhile atm. Jobs are hard to find in NYC.
Re: Need to replace stock speakers
I did make a trip to Best Buy to replace the rotted out rear spekers. I purchased Pioneer TS-6964R 3-way 6x9's ON SALE for $59.99. I installed them but can't listen to them yet 'cuz of various work going on with the car. They sounded pretty good in the store.
It stinks for jobs here in Illinois, too!

Re: Need to replace stock speakers
Quite frankly, if you can afford it, rewire the sound. Put the 6X9s in the rear, and 4X6s in the front, then a sub in the trunk. Then you just have to deal with positive/negative wires and you know exactly where they go.

Re: Need to replace stock speakers
6x9s wont fit anywhere up front without some work. you'd have to reinforce the doors and build them out to support, but by that point, it would just be better to get some kick panel enclosures and throw in a set of components. much better results.
Re: Need to replace stock speakers
Hey 1ADan, in regards to the kickplates, how deep is the mounting depth on them with power windows. I want to install the tweeters below but am not sure if they will fit.
Thanks

Re: Need to replace stock speakers
kick panel enclosures go in front of the doors and replace the plastic pieces that are currently installed on the car. the problem with trying to use the doors is that they are cardboard and not very rigid, along with the power window motor being right behind the front of the panel. Depending on the mid you're trying to use, the door panels need to be built out at least 3/4". However, if you don't build a rigid frame to the door itself, you will be losing speaker output thanks to some of the vibration being absorbed by the panel itself
