Custom fiberglass sub box in rear sears?

Anyone have a custom fiberglass box setup in their rear seats? I am looking to take on a fiberglass sub enclosure project. I have all the system components from my previous SUV - 2 10" Rockford P3's and two amps.

I'd like to make a nice box with the two subs angled forward and to the center of the car slightly and the amps in the middle or maybe i might mount them up on the sloped floorboard the goes up and over the gas tank.

I'd like to see some pics of something similar if anyone has done it.

Going to need a lot of planning/time to take on something like this. I've never worked with fiberglass before so this should be fun.

I've played with sub placement extensively in thirdgens, and the back-seat area results in a null at low frequencies. The rear wheel well is a far superior location from a sound quality (and SPL) standpoint.

Re: Custom fiberglass sub box in rear sears?

Unfortunately i really dont have anymore of a rear trunk/wheel well anymore. My battery is in the sprare tire location and the rear trunk/floor is cut up and modified for a fuel cell.

Sounds like i am going to a new level from anything i have seen as far as the rear seats go. Im not looking for competition sound but just something that will have good bass and sound and looks. car has so much done to it that this should not be cheaped out on.

Instead of worrying about what others have done or where to do it i guess im looking for more help on how to go about starting. there are numerous ways to go here...

1 - i can cut the carpet, lay foil/tape all over the floor pan and up the sides and fiberglass right over the existing contours to get a base set.

or

2 - i can leave (or cut) the carpet and then create an MDF (or other suggestion) base, with wood dowel supports and wood rings for the sub mount. I didnt like this because of the extra weight going in with the MDF but it seems to be A LOT easier and save hours of fiberglassing inside the car. Idea here is to create the base, test fit it, then do al the fiberglass work outside the car. i'm hoping to create something that i can just set into the rear by taking the seats out. I've got a roll bar as well so it may get interesting to make this work.

For those of you who know how to use fiberglass well or anyone who has suggestions on what would work best i'd greatly appreciate to hear from you. i'll try to get some pics of the space i have to work with. My floor boards (where the rear seats used to be) are cut and raised slightly and are not flat to make room underneath for the mufflers to fit.

Thanks

Re: Custom fiberglass sub box in rear sears?

bringing this one back from the past.

Finally am moving forward with this. i had stopped all car related stuff because i just got married at the end of 2011. Now its full steam ahead into the enclosure project.

What can i do to help reduce the null sound at low frequencies? I have no choice but to use the rear seats for my build.

Am i along the right lines to lay the base in the car then pull it out and build the rest of it outside?

I am also now looking into adding plexiglass covers and LED lighting to light up the amps and get a really good looking setup. The whole box will be painted to match the car.

need as much help/opinions as possible. specially on which resin/fabric to use.

Re: Custom fiberglass sub box in rear sears?

How is the sound with the subs facing up? I'm thinking of having them facing forward so I can mount the amps on top of the sub enclosure.

Re: Custom fiberglass sub box in rear sears?

sounds great, a common misconception is that the direction the sub faces matters, subbass is non-directional sound unlike midrange or tweeter which it matters more where they are directed. It is important to pay attention to the internal size of the enclosure and match it with the specs of the manufacture and you will be fine.

Facing of the sub does matter. Ive installed and studied the little handbook that Crutchfield gave out for free back in the late 90's. If the sub faces the front of the car, the bass will sound punchy. If the sub faces towards the rear, the bass will sound more boomier. BUT, it all depends on the enclosure (sealed, ported, bandpass, or free-air) as well. Another factor that comes into play is the vehicles structure, shape, sturdyness of the sheet metal, and the size of the internal volume of the car. Everything is a factor when it comes to play when your dealing with frequency levels that are below 200Hz. Here is a good example that bass is directional, to a small extent. Have you ever been in a room that has a sub? stand in the middle of the room facing the sub. You'll here the bass. Now stand in each corner facing the wall. Depending where the sub is placed, the volume level and intensity of the bass various in each corner. so yes, bass is "omni-directional", not "non-directional".

BUT, I love your idea of placing the subs in place of the rear seats. It makes the whole idea of having a sound system more creative and custom.

I agree with all you said, I did not mean that direction does not matter at all I was just trying to keep it simple instead of going into so much detail that might confuse someone that is just starting out or has limited experience with high end sound quality systems, I definitely agree that the structure of the car and the sturdiness of the enclosure are very important my enclosures are a half inch thick fiberglass bolted to the car with 3/4'' bolts with sound deadening between that.

Re: Custom fiberglass sub box in rear sears?

I've seen 1 car w/ the "wall" style set up... 3 JLW6's (back in the mid 90's) and that thing was LOUD!!!! Sounded really good too if I remember correctly... I've toyed w/ the idea of converting my whole wanna-be back seat into a sound wall but, I have yet to have time

Hahaha. It's not called a "sound wall". In the car audio world, it's called a baffle.
