Re-wire or not?

Hi, Im quite new to the forum.
Have just bought a 1985 T/A. The car is in Indiana, and I am in Norway, so I have not actually seen the car or heard the stereo myself. It's supposed to be all stock though, so I have a feeling that I would want to change it out when I do.
If I do decide to do anything about it, I plan on changing the speakers, preferably to Focal if they have anything that will match the orignal mounts. I am thinking about going for a HU with navigation included. Something like this: http://www.onlinecarstereo.com/CarAu...ion_NZ500.aspx
The big question then being, will there be any point in doing these changeouts and keeping the original harness? I am of course hoping to do it as simple as possible, but not sure if the original wirering will be up for the task of giving a set-up like this the right conditions....
This is what my car looks like, sorry but these are the best pictures I have of the HU:

You can keep stock wiring but if you start pulling a lot of watts the sound won't be as nice. I prefer to just run new speaker wire that way you know what kind of wire you have, how good of a condition and it will last longer than a factory wire that may have bare spots or other peoples handy work with it. ITs truely up to you and the amount of effort you want to put in. Jesse

Re: Re-wire or not?

Thanks.
Doubt that the wires are messed up, only one owner on it.
Figure I'll just try changing the HU and speakers if the stereo is crappy. If I can't get decent sound with the original wirering I'll just have to replace at a later time and add an amp as well.
Will only be swiching speakers with some that go in the original positions though, don't want to start any kind of cutting.

Re: Re-wire or not?

Anybody know what kind of stereo that is by the way?
I don't know how many different options you could get in 1985?

Re: Re-wire or not?

If you can hear a difference in wire, then you could be very rich....

The only time I've heard a perceived difference was when trying to drive very low frequencies, like those that a subwoofer would re-produce, through 18 AWG wire, then using proper 12 AWG or larger wire.

For the small full range speakers, the OEM wires will be fine.

Welcome to the board.

The deck is a stock factory AC Delco unit. Cassette player with separate slider controls for the bass and treble and push button presets for the radio stations.

Re: Re-wire or not?

Thanks alot.
This board reminds me of the BMW boards I have been a member of for several years; No matter haw basic your questions are, you will always get decent and nice answers to them, and always there will be people with a whole lot of experience chiming in. Just gotta love it :-)

I suppose my stereo is one that can be modified to mp3 then, by this write-up: https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/car-...-mp3-jack.html

Are there anyone who have tried this that can chime in please?
Saw some of these advertised on ebay, does it really have to end up with the big ugly plug from the face of the stereo? Can't it be integrated instead?
