getting rid of front 4x6's....

i was looking the front speakers and it seems like there is plenty of space to fit 6x9's or something bigger than 4x6's, prob a stupid question but does anyone know of any brackets (theyd have to be a little deeper set) made to house any other size or am i gonna have to make ones myself? i feel like someone had to have done this before

The space up there is a bit limited, 6x9's are too thick to fit up there. I'm not an expert, just gave it a shot last weekend lol. Shop around for a thin set, 2"-2 1/2" max. Get rid of the vent ducting and you will have lots of room.

if you take off the dash pad, you'll see what you're up against; the dash isn't very deep and there are a few ducts that clutter up the area. if you've got the cash, the best route is a component set at the kick panels. Others have some luck getting shallow 5 1/4 or 6 1/2 round speakers to fit with some creative mounting bracket work.

Ya, look again lol, measure too. You can get away with a 2 1/2" tall speaker on the pass side, I had a 3" tall 6" round speaker in there with the dash pad sitting on the speaker just about. The drivers side needs to be under 2 1/2" because there is less space on that side.

I found out the hard way that my JBL 4x6 didn't fit. Pass side was fine but forget about the driver side.

I ended up with a 2way system consisting of a Pioneer tweeter and Aura 3.5" mid-driver with a neo magnet. Works great. The Aura has a pretty good throw to it. They cost me less than the JBL's

Re: getting rid of front 4x6's....

I fit Eclipse 6.5s in the dash of my 89 RS way back in the day, but you have to hack the brackets and use a VERY shallow magnet. I tried using Kappa 6.5s first, and managed to crack one of the speaker vents because they were too deep

My plan for my 86 is to simply use Q Logic 5.25 kicks for MB Quarts I already own.
