Would a 2002 Delco cd stereo fit in my 1990 Firebird?

I have a chance to pick up a clean working Delco cd stereo that was removed from a 2002 Silverado truck.

It looks to be the same general size, but thought I would ask here first to see if anyone here would know if it would fit.

I had thought I saw a post from a member here who had one installed in his camaro, but cant find the thread now.

So anyone here know if it would fit into a Firebird?

if it is the same din 1.5 size then yes it will probably fit. Will it work? hard to say. Many of those have the theft lock system built into them and require a code to get them to operate. Not sure if there is a way to defeat it. Perhaps someone can chime in to answer that.....or try googling that.

Re: Would a 2002 Delco cd stereo fit in my 1990 Firebird?

I had an old 2000 S-10 with the DIN 1.5 CD player and I am pretty sure it would work without any mods. As far as I know it didn't have any theft lock, as I replaced batteries and alternators and never had to muck about with it. I can't speak for the 2002 but if you already have it, try installing it! If you have any theft-lock issues, try the link above.

Re: Would a 2002 Delco cd stereo fit in my 1990 Firebird?

The radio will fit in the opening but not forsure if you can use or switch over brackets to mount it. I am pretty sure that it wont work though. I know around those years that gm switched to a data bus system. Door chime and a few other things go thru the radio for things to work in the vehicle. Also, the connector will be different and there isnt an ignition wire that goes to those radios. The constant 12v wire and the speaker wires are there. I think the BCM is what makes the radio turn on and off. Plus it should be a theft lock radio and it will need the code for it to work anyway if its been turned on before the radio was removed.

Re: Would a 2002 Delco cd stereo fit in my 1990 Firebird?

Thanks for all the info guys,I wasn't sure if it would work or not and have not bought it yet.I know for a fact it does have the theftlock feature because it says theftlock on the faceplate...I don't know if it's been activated or not though.

I could have sworn someone here had a camaro with one of these cd players in it,that's the only reason I thought it may be useable, but I guess I'll pass on it.

Will the mid 90's Pontiac delco cd players with the red displays and 7 band eqs work in our cars? I've been told the factory correct early 90's cd players are crap so I was hoping to be able to use a fourth gen cd stereo...any advice?

Re: Would a 2002 Delco cd stereo fit in my 1990 Firebird?

Mid 90's radios should work if the plugs are the same and its not bose. If the connectors are different, a pigtail will probably be available to wire it up. It will probably still be a theft lock radio so make sure you have the code if the radio is activated for it. I know there are ways to get around it like a master code or something but dont know how right off hand.

Re: Would a 2002 Delco cd stereo fit in my 1990 Firebird?

In my 2000 truck the original radio had the theft lock and I had to bring it in to the dealer and pay about $35 to get it unlocked and get the code. If you do not request the code they will not give it to you.
As it is not a problem putting an aftermarket stereo in these later vehicles you should be able to adapt it to work.
I would want the original harness plug for it with a little wire. Then buy the proper aftermarket adapter for your car and search for a wiring diagram for the new radio plug and you should be able to get it working.

Re: Would a 2002 Delco cd stereo fit in my 1990 Firebird?

So what year did they switch the plugs over? I was told that 1990 cars have the later style connectors, but cant confirm that for sure.

What I basically want to do is use a later model Delco cd stereo that will be a direct fit without hacking,or modifying the car.Since this stereo is a din and a half size I thought it may fit.

I have that same model in my 89 RS. SInce it came from a truck, the mounting bracketry was different. I had to remove the slide mounts from the case and use some angle stock aluminum to fab some mounting tabs for the face plate. Other than that, a direct fit. Oh, I also had to replace my harness (I'm told 89+ has the newer harness required for this deck) since a previous owner decided it was a good idea to cut the original out for aftermarket.

I have a thread somewhere, I'll have to search later when I get home...

Re: Would a 2002 Delco cd stereo fit in my 1990 Firebird?

Cool! Would I be able to remove the mounting brackets from my stock cassette deck and install them on the truck cd player,or does the truck cd player lack the holes for them?

Thanks Al,for all the info.Did you have any issues with the length of the deck being different or did it fit right in?

Re: Would a 2002 Delco cd stereo fit in my 1990 Firebird?

I bought the deck used from a car stereo store and kind of morphed two decks into one. The slide mounts were actually part of the bottom cover, I had that removed and replaced with a cover from an inoperative car deck. For me, mounting depth was perfect with no interference, the metal bracket had already been removed so I can't say it doesn't interfere. IIRC, the truck deck lacked the holes to mount the side brackets, hence the reason for the angle stock aluminum screwed to the side of the face plate.

I couldn't find that thread, but found some pictures to show my fabbed side brackets (might be in a different 3rd gen forum), the fist shows where one was screwed to the side of the face plate (or just behind the face plate). The second shows the deck installed without the trim piece.
