Help, I need a bigger alternator!

So I'm nearing the finish of my audio system but starting the lighting system also. I have 2x1000 Phoenix Gold amps, 2x JL 12w3v3 4-Ohm, 2x Infinity Reference 6x9, 2x Infinity Kappa 4x6. I'm about to put neon lights on the inside and later plan on putting Halo headlights and underglow lights on the car, the only problem is that my 79Amp alternator doesn't have the ***** to push this all and I don't know where I'll be able to find an alternator big enough to push it all. The largest alternator I could find is 200Amps, is this big enough?

I plan on putting about 15 lights on the inside, want to light the berli up like a christmas tree :-)

(Car is a v-6)

Re: Help, I need a bigger alternator!

Final plans are to have House of Kilor Kandy Apple Red, Gold Enkei 18's, yellow oracle halo's. It's not going to be a rice burner, that would require a turbo and some ghetto muffler.
Must be a crime to have something different than anyone else, sorry for trying to come up with something that hasn't been done yet.

So anyone with useful information?

Re: Help, I need a bigger alternator!

Very simple, watts divided by volts = amps
Or if you want it the other way around volts 13.5 X amps 200 = watts 2700

What you need to know is the total power draw on the audio and lighting system plus the power draw to keep the car operational and charge the batteries and you are going to need more than two batteries to do what you are wanting to do.

Oh please, dude. That's no excuse. I could put green wheels on my car. Paint it pink, too. It'd be original, but would it be tasteful? No!

I'm not saying you have bad taste, but you are just going to look stupid and you will be frowned upon by many car enthusiasts by putting bright yellow headlights and golden wheels on a Camaro. The colors do not seem like they would mesh well with KAR. And, although the Oracles look pretty menacing, I have to say, I can almost guarantee you that you will get a ticket for them. Undercarriage lighting would just be the topping on the ridiculous cake. This is even more saddening (to me, anyways) because it is a Berlinetta. Those are getting rare. You want to be original, restore the car.

That being said, it's your car. Don't take my opinion too seriously, you can do whatever you want with it. Just don't do something to the car you will regret. You're already putting more money in the car than it's worth.

+1 IW and jayhawk

To the OP, 200A should be plenty and probably as big as you're gonna get for a V6.

Really? Car enthusiasts? It is a third gen camaro. The fact that it wi be one color is better then 95 percent of them out there. I love it everytime someone wants to do something different , people talk sh$t. Aint nothing wrong with underglow. I have a satin black camaro with red highlights and I think a red underglow would look cool as hell.

Well, that's because being original seems to usually include ludicrous modifications to the car. People are starting to go to very great lengths to be original an it's getting to where you have to do real odd things to be different.

Re: Help, I need a bigger alternator!

As long as Berli has the time and money to spend, let him go for it. I've seen some lambghordini doors, whole car painted pink and blue in and out on a third gen Bird at the car show here in Dayton Ohio and an old Rolls Royce front end on a third gen Bird. What is radical in this day and age? If he could jack it up with a 4X4 drive and put 30 inch tires and wheels on it, that would be worth looking at.

Re: Help, I need a bigger alternator!

thanks jchaussee, i've had my berlinetta painted like the one in the brochure for about 3 years now and average about 1 compliment a year (black w/ gold pin stripe). im wanting something different that hasn't been done yet. it's such a crime to be different these days that people are scared to branch out and do something new. why can't a camaro have gold 18s with underglow? because someone hasn't done it yet?

The whole debate is about personal taste. Bottom line, if you like it, do it. Honestly, who cares about what other people think. It's your car. Enjoy it.

Run a second battery, do the BIG 3 and 145 amp alt (stock alt for caddy and caprice).

145 amp alt is a bit bigger than stock but will fit (search for tech article).

You should be fine.

Re: Help, I need a bigger alternator!

With the two amps for the speakers/subs if you are that concerned about alternator power consider a capacitor. Also do not push the amps as loud as possible. One other possibility is to limit all the extra lighting use when the stereo is on. What you can do will show up with the digital voltmeter on a good capacitor. When it starts to go low over a period of time then you know you have got to much running and cut back some.

I am not going to say don't do it because it is your car but instead give you a couple things to think about.
Interior lighting should never be on while driving at night. It is obviously unsafe and can be ticketable. Parked is different story.
Underglow lighting should only be used parked and is ticketable while moving but normally will not find an officer that cares to take the time.

Now with this in mind put a good sized capacitor in there and find out what you can use at one time once you get a bigger alternator in there with the big three.

Re: Help, I need a bigger alternator!

yeah it'd be pretty original if I took a machine gun to my Z28 and then drove around town. Lots o' bullet holes. Thats pretty unique. Who gives two ***** about being unique if that means you have to look ugly and stupid. How bout that guy from the movie Mask? He's unique. You think he feels cool? You want to be like him? Unique does NOT mean tasteful, cool, interesting, exciting, or respected. Unique is a ricers excuse to defile a great, cool car.

I agree with everything youre saying! I own an 86 Berli and reading what this guys plans to do to a berlinetta just breaks my heart, mine is all original and it looks good and purrs liike a kitten. all this 2fast2furious BS is completely unnecessary.

oops...

We do the Old Town friday night cruise down here in Kissimmee almost weekly. I took the minimalist approach and just went under the front air dams. The tourists love it, LOL.

As far as appearance, do whatever you want to do, and screw anyone elses opinion. You car is a personal statement, you don't need their approval. I see no difference between slapping lights all over it and swapping out for a 454 with a blower poking through the hood as far as 'ruining' the car goes, except that it's easy to remove the lights to bring it back to stock. You can't really 'use' either one when driving anyway, unless you want tickets. The 454 is 'cool' simply because it serves the purpose of being one of the largest ***** extensions you can buy. You do what you want to do... just don't expect everyone here to approve.

If you go with LED instead of neon you will need less power, produce less heat, and get more durability and time of use out of them

Whats this? What year alt from Caddy or Cap'? I got a 1987 TPI V Belt set up. I'm gonna be putting in a Cerwin Vega Stroker - Old school one and I'm scared for my electrical system and my stock alt.

get an alternator from a 99 chevy van, 140 amp option. pretty robust unit and requires you elongate one hole. i swapped mine in 20 mins. i got away with stock belt as well.
