Rear mount camera location

Im adding a back up camera to my system and was wondering where people are mounting them for best results. Pics would be helpful. I purchased a pioneer ND-BC6 to go with the pioneer 1400 dvd player. Wife has been driving my camaro and was complaining about the dark tint when she backs up so I figured this might help a little. Any help would be grateful, Thanks guys

Can mount under the trim or mount on plate. Higher is better.

On my 86 I put my camera into the third brake light up on the back glass. I have a wall of subs so I needed a way to get past the huge blind spot. I wired it to the acc so its on when the cars on and routed to a 7" screen under the center vents on the dash. If you want it to come on only when in reverse then tap the back up wire in the loom under your cubby compartment left side rear.

Re: Rear mount camera location

Mine came with a bracket to mount to the top two holes of the license plate frame.
It seems to work fine there although I do like the third brake light idea.
My third brake is in my spoiler (which is flush mounted) so not sure how it would look there on my car.

Re: Rear mount camera location

mine as well. i cut the ends off and made a trim hole in the lens of 3rd light and epoxied it in. if you still want the lights to light up you can still have them on each side of the cam. to those behind you they will think you have a light out but who cares when it comes to custom.
you could also look into mounting it inside the top of the glass

Re: Rear mount camera location

I like the third light mount, bet it has good vision. My car doesnt have one inside or out although I tried mounting iton the inside roof, right on the edge of the glass but The rear window defroster lines partially blocked the vision. I ended mounting it on the bottom of the 91-92 rear spoiler im currently running. Vision is good and you cant see it unless you look for it.

It was my first attempt at making fiberglass pods for the 8's. I'm going to make a differend design. I didnt want to cut into any metal or plastic, so they are surface mounted. In fact, all of my install has been aimed at the ability to return the whole interior to stock if needed, except the dash pad. Theres not many of our cars left on the road in really nice shape and they will hit classic some day soon, if the time comes to sell the car, I dont want a chopped up interior. Ive got a few thumbs down from classic owners saying i've killed a nice car.
Some like it, some hate it... I love it.
Tho now that you mention it, they do look like dog bowls, thanks

I really like the firebird placement. Looks like it belonged there. Just use a power hatch and use the release button on the dash. Very Nice!

Re: Rear mount camera location

just in case the battery died, fabricated a pull cable system to open my trunk. as for the night vision. it works really good with the backup lights but if the car behind you has his headlights on your screwed!

Re: Rear mount camera location

I'd like to do something like this but I'm not sure where I could put one. Mine's a Camaro 'vert with the 3rd stop light in the spoiler. I'm not sure how I'd run the wiring.

Size: 105.2 KB A little cheap but it works great and it only cost me 15.00 installed. XD Not sure on the laws of your state but I was going to mount to the top of the plate but that is where our expiration tag is and we are not allowed to have anything cover any part of the sticker

I like this as it doesn't require drilling additional holes in the body.. The only problem I can foresee using this on a camaro though, is the rear License plate flips downward so you can't put it on the top unless you don't want to use your rear key ever again and if you put it on the bottom, it will rub on top of the rear bumper..

And as mine is a convertible, I do not have a trunk release button inside the car and have to use my key to get into the trunk.

Re: Rear mount camera location

On the camaro you can put it on the top of the plate, just run the wire between L plate and back plate down to the hinge and go left inside the bumper under the left taillight to the loom grommet, drill a hole with new grommet and enter under the lock box and rout down the drivers side. This was its first location before going to the third b light, I wasnt getting enough view with it being a constant cam.
You can prob tap the loom grommet if you dont want to drill.

How did you run the wires inside the car from high mount third brake light on the 86?

Re: Rear mount camera location

First time i wired in the camera it was a wireless vid unit. The cam only had pos and neg wires, so i disconnected the brake light lead behind the plastic that covers the trunk latch and connected an acc lead to it. The 3rd b light and defrost ground through the struts. Then wired the pos and neg to the light terminals. Now im wanting to grow some ***** and drill and grommet the glass under the pod with a glass bit so i can run a standard cam(better resolution) and reconnect the b light with led to match my led tail light setup.
