Antenna?

Did any of the 3rd gens come with an antenna built in the windshield? Seems like the perfect place for one, I mean no problems with power antenna and no hole to shave if you don't want it there. By the way, what are you guys doing for an antenna if you do shave the hole?

Re: Antenna?

They all came with the antenna in the fender, unless it came without a radio.

Re: Antenna?

I shaved mine...I haven't gotten to install anything yet to replace it...But I was thinking of using a antenna from a new Chrysler 300..and put it center and to the back of my car...

Re: Antenna?

Anyone thought of using a shark fin antenna with a magnetic mount?

Re: Antenna?

Then you would have a wire coming out the side like a C.B. antenna. ..maube a factory shark fin...so you dont see a wire...

BIGKEG & ringo, both are good ideas. think I like the 300 idea best. Wonder how it work mounted center of hatch toward the rear?

Re: Antenna?

the wire can be hidden under the plastic pieces in the hatch and under the plastic panels and under the carpet along the doors. A good installer would have no problem.

Re: Antenna?

I'm talking about the outside of a car ...just like a magnet mount C.B.antenna. ..when the wire gets inside, it can be hidden. .but on the outside it would look like a C.B antenna. ...the factory one mounts to the body...and I'm sure some kind of hole will need to be cut...but the look would be better. ...

Re: Antenna?

If the antenna is mounted on the roof just above the rear glass the wire can run under the weather striping to the inside of the car with maybe 1/2" at most is visible. I was going to use it one for my TV but the TV portion of my radio was analog so since there wasn't any stations I never went ahead but I did test fit it and the wire wasn't noticeable.

Re: Antenna?

No antenna in the windshield as far as I know, but what is interesting is in my 82 there is a provision (plugged hole in the sheet metal) for one. So at some point GM must have considered it.

I have shaved mine and I am going to try laying one sideways under the dash pad (not the best ground plane though), I also have a few other ideas as well.

Re: Antenna?

I shaved mine years ago before I painted the car. Found a universal electronic one on ebay, ran the wire under the dash, then under the pillar to the windshield just under the roof. Can't even tell it's there. AM stations get fuzzed out when driving under an overpass, but otherwise it works great. It's a little rectangular box about 3 inches long by 1 inch thick. Not a bad little purchase.

Re: Antenna?

I seem to behaving a hard time explaining this. There is no antenna in the window. I am trying to say if you mount the antenna on the roof above the rear window and open the the hatch you can snake the wire inside the car under the plastic and rubber pieces and work it up to the radio. It's not that complicated. The wire on the shark fin antenna isn't as heavy a regular antenna and easy to conceal. But it is your car and you will figure it out.

Re: Antenna?

I don't remember the seller, but this is pretty much like the one I got. I remember paying around this price when I ordered it. It's a magnetic antena. Worked pretty well.

Re: Antenna?

ringo; I completely understand what your saying about the mounting I'm just not sure if that is something I would want to see on my roof line. I haven't actually seen one of these in person so it might not be bad.
Camaromike; that looks like something worth presuing

Re: Antenna?

OK, then I thought you were concerned about exposed wires. They are not expensive and can be removed easily. If you you shave the stock antenna not sure of any other options.

Re: Antenna?

It's actually a really clean install and look. Felt good not seeing an ugly rod sticking out of my fender anymore.
