Firbird (TA) 5.25 or 6.5" speaker in the dash?

Yea, i know it's possible in a camaro, but the firebirds have a much tighter dash openings, especially the driver's side. The driver's side basically has 1.77" depth with a recess a little bigger in diameter than the speaker magnet.

has anyone tried getting a 5.25 or 6.5" driver in there? I haven't found any that shallow yet (I'm sure there's something out there, radio shack used to make a really nice 5.25" that was actually sold in a radio shack box, but haven't seen it for years).

Alternatively, I'm thinking about removing the grill plate out of the dash, cutting out a new one out of some roughly 1/4 or 1/2" MDF, then cutting a cutout for a 5.25 or 6.5" driver lined up on the magnet recess and top mounting it on the dash. That will not give you more room for a larger magnet, but will add 3/4-1" to the available mounting depth (more if you want to make the plate thicker), which I think might work...
