my dual alpine type s 15 build

well i have recently ordered 4 alpine type type s 15 subs for building some tapped horn subwoofer enclosures for a gig i dj 2 times a month.

well turns out i only needed 2 enclosures

this is what those look like internally

heres somones video of this enclosure playing a 19hz sine wave, these enclosures use either the alpine type s 15 or the kicker cvx 15

these things play all the way down to 15hz , and kill the typical vented 18 subs i was using for the dj gig, my original subs didnt go below 40hz to well and i end up playing alot of dubstep stuff for the dj gigs

anyways instead of sending the extra alpines back , i figured id put them in the iroc to replace the pheniox gold 12's i currently have , hell i only paid 350bucks shipped for all 4 15's brand new

anyways the plan is to build an enclosure in te back seat area , the iroc is getting a full cage installed so noone can sit in the backseat anyways.

im still undecided but im either going to build a dual slot vented enclosure or one massive bandpass enclosure , probably going to be a dual slot vented enclosure

i have a friend with 2 old crossfire 1000d's that ill be buying to power these in the car

anyways stay tuned for box build pictures

Re: my dual alpine type s 15 build

im going to go with a dual slot vented design but innstead of building it out of mdf or plywood im thinkming about doing a fiberglass box .

how many of u guys have experiance with fiberglass box building .

what would it take to build one to hold up to the 2 15's
would u make it completly out of fiberglass or would u use a wooden botom/back etc

Re: my dual alpine type s 15 build

lol well i should update this , i went to start installing the amps and cabling today along with my headunit just to find out all the speakers in the front are blown, and the rear 6x9's were removed

i was planning on using whatever was in there to get the stereo running and then upgrade the mids and highs but looks like i have to do that first

any suggestion son some 4x6 plates and 6x9's that will keep up with a set of alpine type s 15's

ill get some pics of the amps/headunit and 15's for ya guys tommorow

Re: my dual alpine type s 15 build

btw this is my parts list of stuff i had laying around ill be using
head unit jvc kd-lh300
a pair of mtx thunder 102 amps for mids and highs ( one for front and one for rear)
a apir of mtx thunder 4202's one amp bridged for each 15 (300W rms @ 14.4V @ 4 ohm )
audio control eqs trunk/amprack mount eq
1 pair of alpine type s 15's mounted in the backseat area in a custom slot vented enclosure

the only thing im missing at this point is some 4x6 plates or components for the front mids/highs/ and some 6x9's for the rear mids and highs

the mtx 4202's are a bit underpowered for the aplines so eventually i will get something to replace those amps and move those amps to mid/high duty

yes they do they have massive punch in that enclosure , i only hope that the vented box im going to build sounds as good as those 2 tapped horn enclosures i use for my dj rig.

think of those enclosures as a massive megaphone its makes things much much louder

Re: my dual alpine type s 15 build

im going to try something , im building another tapped horn except this is going to go in the camaro or truck to see how it works as a car audio sub box, i have seen 8's used in tapped horns in car audio before and they sounded damn good, so this should work really well

only downside is ill only be able to fit one , the upside is the amps i was going to use to power both 15's i could use each one to power one voice coil of the sub getting me about 2x the power

heres a clip of how much punch this box has

i took another clip with some rap music with some boomy bass and some low freq drops but that way over powered the mic

please tell me the chipboard plywood you have fabbed up is purely for testing purposes before you buy 3/4" MDF.

Re: my dual alpine type s 15 build

Yeah that osb is never gonna work. Your box isn't sealed so you won't have to deal with the pressure a 12 can cause, but your still moving air which in turn causes vibration which is what makes sound. What's your plan for fastening all this together? The cad drawings show some reinforcing gussets. What's the plans for those osb also? As a cabinet maker and class A contractor I can tell you that never gonna last. If your against using mdf you could probably find some good 5/8ths plywood and make your design work and last for more than a month.

Re: my dual alpine type s 15 build

I would highly suggest using some 3/4" MDF or 3/4" Birch Ply man.. That plywood is not the best way to go for strength or acoustics...

Re: my dual alpine type s 15 build

osb is stronger then mdf in the same thickness , in this type of box mdf would break apart , i dont think u guys relize the amount of pressure that is inbetween the dividers in this box.( ill gladly put 100 watts to this and see if any of u guys can mange to stick and keep ur head in the mouth of the horn for more then 2-3 second , at full power u cant even get ur head close to the horn on this box )
( it is also heavily braced internally but i didnt take pics of that)

maybe in 1 inch thick mdf could be used but it would change the internal dimensions of the box screwing up the output and responce let alone the tuning of the box , it would shrink the chamber the 15 fires into enough it would probably destroy the driver. to use 1inch stuff would need a complete redisgn of the box
ideally birch ply should be used but at 75$'s a sheet ( this box takes 3 sheets to build) osb is 22 a sheet

im glad i went the cheap way cause the box turned out to be 1.75 inch to wide to fit with my rollbar in place

im working witht he designer of this box to come up with a box for an alpine type r 12 instead . i wanted to goto an 18 tuned down to around 10hz but the horn path is not long enough for an 18 , not to mention in now way in hell will it fit behind my roll bar

once we nail down the perfect enclosure ill end up building it out of birch

Re: my dual alpine type s 15 build

here is the in truck response of a single box ( yes i stuck one in my ext cab silverado for the hell of it )

the dip starting at 75hz is were i have it crossed over, the dip on the low end is from my subsonic filter , when i have time ill remeasure at fullpower with no subonic filter on , im expecting the -3db point to be around 15hz with no subsonic filter engaged

Good gravy man, that's an insane frequency sweep! You might be able to knock kidney stones loose with that!

hell yes that horn enclosure is flat as can be it will actually play upto 95/100 hz before it drops off

cant wait to take a full power measurement with the subsonic filter set to around 10hz , i would turn it completly off but at 10hz and below it will be way to easy to get over excursion of the driver ,even at 15hz it will be risky but ive played 15hz sine waves threw it already without the driver bottoming out so i should be ok

nextime ill do a sweep from 10hz to 110hz ill cross the box over at 120 so u can see the full range of it

here it is with a pair of the boxes driven off the single mtx4202 about 175/200watts rms each speaker had to keep the volume down cause my mic is only good upto 138/139 db

a little more eq'ing and this box will be dead flat from 13hz to 80hz , perfect for an sq system or db drag racing
