stock amp and subwoofer
I am converting my audio system to the UQ7 option. Years ago, my dad got the gain switch and got it to work with an aftermarket sub woofer with the original radio and speakers. I want to convert it completely so I am looking for the amplifier PN# 16040752 and the subwoofers. I also need a little wiring help. I have two wiring harnesses the first, one end that connects to the switch and the other end into a 15 pin black connector, 5 pins of which are used. The other harness hass a 6 pin connector, 4 pins of which are used which goes into a white connector housing 15 pins, all of which are used, they are completely separate from one another. I am lead to believe the second harness i mentioned, the white connector connects to the amplifier and the 6 pin connector I know connects into a connector already in the car. How do these two come together???

Re: stock amp and subwoofer
The UQ7 wiring has a female plug that the male plug that plugs into the HU in a non-Performance Sound equipped car plugs into. The UQ7 harnese has the same male plug that than plugs into the HU, so it acts like a tap or an adaptor. The 20 watt subwoofer amplifier has high-power speaker inputs that it taps from the output of the HU. The female plug that is part of the UQ7 specific wiring is located behind and under the radio pod. It is not usually seen unless the pod is removed from the car. If you can find a UQ7 equipped car, you should be able to remove the Performance Sound wiring from the other wiring and install it in your car fairly easy. The gain control adjust the voltage input to the power supply on the amplifier, and thus the controls the amplifer output.

Re: stock amp and subwoofer
you are unlikely to find good speakers, my uq7 subs lasted till maybe the late 90's, i would imagine they would all be blown or rotted apart. there was a thread on here where someone posted that there was someone refurbing them but if your car didnt come with this option it doesnt make any sense to mess with it. i just got the 6x9 plates from a regular one, and aftermarket 6x9's with a aftermarket HU are way better sounding even without an amp than the stock stuff ever was. and its not like you see them with the sail panels on either

Re: stock amp and subwoofer
I started the thread because I have the wiring and switch, and I am replacing all my radio wiring with the fourth gen radio wiring (since I have the UK3 radio, the connectors are the same). My wiring for the radio has so many cuts, solders and splices in it, I consider it a lost cause. The harness I am installing has one splice, and it is for the branch off into the amp for that car(the fourth gen it came off of). I figured i could use the branch off to my advantage and put in the amp my dad never finished with. As of now I have the switch that's rigged (-my dad did it in the 90's) to work with the puny little sub woofer in the trunk which doesn't do anything. I don't want to get rid of the switch and I would like to crack this nut so to speak. Its just flat out buggin me -its like a half finished project lol and I could see the light at the end of the tunnel.
Anyway, based off of my service manual, it seems that the wires go from the radio to the speakers with a branch off to the amp input, and from the amp, the output has 2 wires that run to the subs. Is this correct?
So, could I potentially run the wires to my nonexistent components (to their locations (by that I mean the subs and amp, not the reg. speakers)) and if I come across this stuff in the future could I just plug it in. It seems that if I run all the wires and leave them to sit there it would not affect my current set up (or ability to play music) negatively.
Now that I am done rambling what do you think?

Re: stock amp and subwoofer
ok to see if i got what you want to do, you have the stock gain switch and a aftermarket amp you want to control with it. and a gm 4rth gen HU. the aftermarket amp is not going to like the way gm did it. if you had an amp that an external gain control, since it sounds like its just a variable resistor you could possibly get it to work that way but not like it works the gm one. and you can use the gm amp for your regular speakers and use the sub amp off of one of those, if it has high level inputs but you wont have much control because it will be messing with the other speakers as well.

No, not quite, I want to install the original equipment that my dad meant to, just never got all the parts for. I have an aftermarket sub that works with the gain switch - only to turn it on. I have a 4th gen radio harness that I am fixing my third gen harness with. The 4th gen harness has provisions for an amp, I was going to use those wires that would have been for the 4th gen amp in the car it came from to install into my car for a third gen amp which I don't yet have.

Re: stock amp and subwoofer
you will have to find diagrams and put them together
