Amp Wiring (Bridging)
Amp Wiring (Bridging)
Quick Question, I have a little 2 channel amp. For the time being, i would like it to power a sub for me. But, the amp booklet says NEVER combine (Bridge) outputs. Dose anyone know what would happen if i did? I am not going to be able to get a real amp for at least another month. I was just wondering if i could get by with this.

It would prolly overheat the amp or blow out something inside.

If they said not to do it, there's a reason. Bridgable amps are built differently so that they are able to do so. I don't remember what the differences are, but I believe that it deals with high power diodes being inserted so that the signal can't feed back into the other amp. Maybe not. I never cared enough to research it. What it boils down to is that you could end up with a paper weight if you try to bridge it, although I have bridged non-bridgable stuff (radio shack) that I didn't care about and had it work. This doesn't mean that you won't blow up the amp if you try though. I'd just use 1 channel from the amp and play it safe. I'm guessing that this is a pretty cheap amp, so you should probably want to replace it as soon as possible anyway.

It is a VERY cheap amp. i only bought it to power a rampage box. it's a small rampage amp, 100watt. (50X2) I am certian thats the max levels. In the book nor the amp will tell be the contenious power, i am guessing around 20W and that is not enough to power this sub. I am taking the time for this new system and getting REAL equpiment. I just got a pioneer TSW253C. got it on sale at sears, for $67
but i won't be able to get the amp for a while. but i am looking for stuff that i have and don't need to pawn and get the money for it.

its totally up to you, it is possible you could fry your amp, and its also possible it will be fine... if you decide to bridge it to power 1 sub, run your wires like, positive sub terminal to the right positive amp terminal, and the negative sub terminal to the left channel negative terminal.. if it is a 4ohm sub, this should bridge it down to a 2ohm mono load if i am correct.. kick it on, if the amp doesnt fry on the spot, move on, slowly working up the gain.. if the amp gets too hot, chances are you are gonna wind up frying it if you keep running it like that.. never have i seen a amp, even a cheap one that couldnt handle a two ohm load.. my old mtx thunder claimed you could only bridge it down to a 2 ohm stereo load, tho ive bridged it down to a 1 ohm load before, and had no problems.. tho that is mtx quality for ya..
the reason you cant bridge it is because there is two radio amp. ic's not bipoler or mosfet outputs . ic's with 16 or 17 pins on it. most bipolers or mosfets have 3 and are high power.your radio out puts would probably sound as good as what you have. save your money and get a high quality amp it will be worth the wait.
