I love hearing my engine roar but I just can't stand my girlfriend's whining anymore about how loud the inside of the car is. I've read up on peel and seal for a low cost option, are there any other methods? Looking to keep things relatively cheap. Would different tires help? And if they do, does anyone have recommendations? I'm not getting a new girlfriend.

I've had great success with Second Skin Damplifier Pro in my black car, did 3/4 of the floor pans and the most of the noise was taken care of but engine noise a little different. Don't get me wrong it does help but you'll need more than just the peel and stick tar paper for that. Prolly going to have to do the whole cabin including the firewall and get a foam blanket on top of that for an ultra quiet interior.

For cheap you can try the B-Stock Damplifier Pro and their Luxury liner on top of that. I have no experience with the liner but it seems good from what I've heard. You can only kill sound on the cheap to an extent. After the peel and stick doesn't work you may have to go with a liner of some sort, but I'm sure she'll be happy with your attempt.

 

get the carpet from a newer car, my 07 monte and the 03 i had has the carpet plus some thick sound/heat deadening stuff, you could probably get some cheap from junk yard and put it on your firewall and or over the carpet in your car.

 

I found a cheaper than $100 cure and just as good as dynomat. Go to your local roofing supply warehouse and ask for a 3ft by 60ft roll of non-granulated asphalt. It is just like dynomat except the aluminum foil is plastic. Remove your carpet and put down two layers to three. Its what i use for floors in sound cars as well as mine. It made a big difference.

Sound deadener would definitely help as would a sound barrier on top of the sound deadener to absorb the ambient noise.

Asphalt belongs on houses not in cars.

To catch ambient noise, you might consider putting any of the following on top of the deadener and on the doors as well

1. Carpet underlay
2. Neoprene closed cell foam - 1/4"
3. Ensolite (self adhesive) from Raamaudio

If I were on a budget, I'd go with the B-Quiet Ultimate and Ensolite.

I used frost wire ac duct insulation. Its not as heavy as the asphalt stuff and has the aluminum backing. I sprayed rust stop down before a installed in just incase my tops start to leak one day. Took 3 rolls @ 20 bucks a roll to do the whole car. And it works! I'm thinking of making my exhaust louder now...its pretty thin. You can see where I stopped at the trans tunnel. I also didn't do behind the dash either, gonna do that when I do the 4th gen dash swap.

 

Why is everyone suggesting the wrong products for this? First of all, do NOT put roofing products in your car. That's idiocy (stay away from all asphalt based products). To actually block noise from entering the cab, deadener will NOT help in a measurable amount. Deadener mats SOLE purpose is to convert vibrations to low level heat (thus quieting rattles). Thats IT. to quiet a car from radiated noise you would use mass loaded vinyl (also known as mlv). Use stuff in the 1 to 2 lbs per sq ft density. Also, use closed cell foam (ccf) to decouple panels to stop rattles at that level. Ive seen people use neoprene rubber in place of mlv, but ive no idea if that's effective (personally, I think id use it in place of ccf, but that's me).

Best of luck to you, and agan, please, don't fill your car with home improvement products, you'll regret it.

 

Also, check your seals. Must noise enters from there.

 

Well I don't regret my choice at all. I've had other third gen owners in my car and ask if it was dynamat because of sound quality. With my windows up my flow masters sound like they are 2 cars behind me. The plastic of my door panels don't rattle because of my subs any longer. Actually NOTHING rattles any more. I understand there is a science behind these over priced sound products and im sure they work better than what I have, the only difference I noticed is the insulation foam pours are bigger so it feels softer (which seems to make it lighter) than the sound equipment. But trust me, if you sat in my car you would agree that it is a good low budget option.

 

No, I doubt I would. I honestly don't know why you would say its quieter. Less rattles? Sure I may believe that. But foil won't quiet a car man. As far as low budget.. I guess? Using less of the better stuff would work as well or better, cost the same or less, and be a lot less work.

The foil backing isn't the reason I choose to use this product...its the foam and adhesive underneath.... the panel pehind the back seats works like a drum....the foam stuck to it doesn't allow it to flex as much. Same as the belly pans and doors. I left the metal on hoping it would help with road noise. Don't know if it was just the foam that did that but it is quieter.... I try to consider myself a logical person and I am my own devils advocate....hence why I put other people in my car that had no idea what was in it....if I chose to tell people on here it was a knock e bay specials....in comparison with the other pictures...there would be no questions other than, "I'm sure it works, but does it work as well as the high quality stuff?" Before you throw salt on my idea go check it out...Cuz I'm sure you haven't used this product for anything. Its made by frost wire, @ home depot, go che k out one of the packs on the self and tell me how u think it compares as far as how it feels to the touch. Check out the pores and such then tell me what u think....I'm not saying use it, just get a full understanding....since it just looks like foil to you, kinda sounds like your own negative pychoacoustic :-)

 

I almost fell out of my chair.. but I can one up that.. I just did the exhaust in my wife's 91 Z.. yeah.. I just said WIFE.. it's not even mine.. she was like wow this thing sounds mean and kind of loud.. I said yeah, now people will be jealous and scared.. the jealous part came from when she said jokingly "oh they are just jealous"

she sounds cool, women seem cooler when you are young. my wife had a 80 monte with a cam, headers, dual flowmasters, etc when we were younger but now she has a bonneville she wont let me mess with and when the exhaust went she said i dont care if the oem stuff is 3 times as expensive i just want it to sound like it did when we got it. and she hasnt rode in my firebird in about 10 years i think
