Here's the easy way to fit 8" subs in the Camaro sail panels.

 

I've thought about this for years, never had the ambition to try it. mounting the speaker is the easy part. Controlling the airspace for the speaker to sound/perform properly is the tricky part.

Did you put anything behind the speakers to control airspace or for sound deadening?

I'm working on a tight budget and lined the inside of the sail panel and wheel arch with an aerobic foam Matt. Using spray glue. I'm not an audio techno and to be honest I'm not calculating anything apart from the speaker magnet not hitting the outside panel. Which it doesn't. I haven't heard it yet as this was only the first one and I still have much to do before the sound stage.

Your trying something, and your enjoying doing it. I respect that. Keep posting as you make progress with it. an easy way to measure airspace is with packing peanuts and a box. Fill the space with the peanuts and then put them in the box and measure cubic feet (LxWxH).

Sometimes I wish I had a hardtop so that I could do things like this again. I did a set of these in my old T-bird with a custom fiberglass bucket. One thing I would recommend is to tune the 8's low. The more mid range you let through, the more the sound stage will get drug to the back of the car.

 

Try an 8x10" piece of Ensolite behind the sub. Will improve the bass response and give better impact.

Also you could use spray foam insulation to seal the area and carve/cut out an enclosure. Its been done here before.

If all else fails, put some Dynamat Xtreme (or other deadener behind the sub and Ensolite on top (Again explained in the "How To").

 

I did this years ago in an 86 Firebird. I used 1/2" MDF for the baffle and mounted Hot Setup (Orion) 8's in there. What I did to control airspace was mount Dynomat to the outer skin. I then placed strips of duct tape in the lower quarter/ door jamb area, supported by mesh drywall tape. For the back side I did the same. I then filled the cavity with spray foam. After cured, I cut out the opening the size I wanted, then coated it the fiberglass resin and mesh. Bam.....a sealed box in the b post.

Knowing what I know now, I'd remake a fiberglass drop in baffle and be done.

 

I've lined the outer skin of the sail panel with a sound deadener. What's all the talk about sealed boxes? Is there a way to seal the panels?

 

I managed to use to great effect a sound deadener from a Spanish DIY store. 36€ for 20sq mts. It covers great. I'm really looking forward to hearing the difference. Can any of you recommend anything to remove the carpet felt backing from the floor pans? Thanks.

 

I did very similar a couple of years ago with good results, at least I'm happy with it. I put up a thread about it, still says under construction, but as far as the subs go, it's complete. I used expanding foam to make the air space for my subs.

Tonight I've sealed the sail panel subs in. I've used expanding foam for the bottom and rear. I've not yet got around to the top. But as the foam was doing its thing I used the time to take out the air box ready to cut out the bottoms tomorrow.

 

I finished sound deadening the floors. Then laid 30mm felt down. Also laid down all the sound system cables then carpets back in.

 

Where'd you get the felt?
