This is what I think. Those stock 4x6's are a complete piece of sh*t and are a horrible place to put speakers b/c you can hardly ever hear them. The system that is being installed in my car will have the 4x6's disconnected and just fun the kick panels in it's place. Hope that helped

If your running speakers in the doors or kicks, do not use the dash locations as well. It will mess up your imaging.

In 99% of the cases, ONE pair of speakers up front is all you want. When you introduce more speakers in different locations, you usually wind up with crap for sound. BUT, unless you are really hard core into your stereo (like me) kick panel speakers are expensive and difficult. For the average Joe, a quality pair of 4x6" speakers in the stock locations work great. My daily driver has Boston 746 4x6" plates in the dash and I'm quite happy with the sound. Sure, it doesn't sound like my IROC, but it still sounds good. The sound reflects off the windshield and will give you a bright sound with a high image. The drawbacks are that the sound stage is narrow and fairly unfocused, and the small driver prevents a good sounding mid bass.

Hey Jim and Justin, what do you think of cars that use four front speakers from the factory?
My '85 Crown Victoria has 4" in the dash, and also 6 1/2" in the doors as part of the factory Premium Sound system. The speakers I have in there right now are crap, but it still sounds pretty nice up front to me. You can't really "hear" the door speakers; it just sounds like a pair of 6 1/2s in the dash...the midbass sounds like it's coming from the dash too.
By the way, you guys would laugh at this "system." In the dash are 4" '93 Accord speakers, in the doors are '93 Taurus speakers, and in the rear deck...two 12s, two horn midranges, and two horn tweeters, which all came from a $99 full-range box. All powered by a little 40x4 Kenwood amp. It doesn't sound very good, but the rear deck looks really cool. (This is one of my older installs by the way, and I was on a budget if you can't tell.)

I had the Bose system in my car at one time also. The front speakers for that system are in the kick panels. There are no speakers in the dash.

I think they all image like ****. That at least goes for all the ones I've heard. I have yet to hear a factory stereo with ANY amount of speakers that creates a marginally decent soundstage.

I would put a 6.5" in the door, then experiment with tweeter placement. I'd try it in the 4" location but if it imaged poorly like I would expect it to, I'd mount it in a coaxial style configuration with the tweeter right in front of the midbass driver. That's IF I couldn't cut a hole to flush the tweeter into the door or kick.

does anyone know where to get speaker kickpannels for a decent price? Qform sells them, but most places want as much as $250 for a pair!

Those Q-forms are about the only game in town. Custom made kicks will usually run you double what the Q-forms sell for. But, there was a guy on here that was supposed to be making some custom kicks for $200 or so that looked a lot nicer than the Q-forms. I haven't heard from him in a while. I suspect that he ran into some problems making a mold (which is why I never did it for mine) but hopefully he'll have them soon.

I replaced the stock speakers with Infinity Reference series. 6x9" three ways in the rear and the 4x6" plates in the front. The plates have a 3-1\2" mids and 3\4" tweeters. I also added a pair of polk ex
3\4" tweeters on the lower face of the dash. In the rear I have a bazooka tube with an MTX thunder 3000 10" sub. Although it's not up to competition specs, it does rock!! All of this is run off of a 4channel and a 2channel amp. I tried to keep my system as cheap as possible since I bought my ride for only $700!!!

Another option is AutoForms custom door panels. They are more expensive than the Q-Forms but will allow more flexible speaker choices. I was able to put 6.5" MB Quart separates in them. You may even be able to put a shallow 8", not sure, but I have considerd it. They also match the interior quite nicely, except they do take up the entire carpered area of the 88+ door panels.

Hey guys, I'm still working on those kicks. In the middle of remodeling a room in my house, so the kicks kinda got put on the back burner. Molds are done, and I made a "test" one, but I'm not 100% satisfied with the smoothness of it. I need to smooth over the molds and then I'll get another set made and will post pics.
