deck and speaker quality questions..
deck and speaker quality questions..
I was thinking about doing the following combo..
stock delco 4th gen cd player
infinity kappa (or similar) 4x6
and a 6" bazooka tube in the rear compartment..(i already have it in there and it sounds fine)
am i wasting my money buying sound quality speakers to use with a stock deck? will they even sound any better than new stock speakers?
the top 3 things im aiming for is..
#1 stock look
#2 cheapness
#3 sound quality
please give me your opinions... thank you

Scrap the stock deck troop. There is WAY MUCH improvement when you install an aftermarket head unit. You can get a standard DIN unit with adapter kit and it will look just fine. Or you can get the 1.5 DIN units which are an exact fit for the stock size.

Yes...definitely use a factory deck! Aftermarkets fit like crap, look like a video game, and the buttons are nearly impossible to use. Aside from speakers and amps, I don't think I've seen a single aftermarket automotive product that has ever been as good as a factory part.
Bazooka tubes do seem to sound pretty decent; I had a 10" amped one in my car for a while. They are overpriced, though. If you already have it and you're satisfied with it, keep it.
I would definitely think that the newer Delco decks certainly have enough power to make good front speakers a worthwhile investment. But if you're on a tight budget, and you look around enough, there are some upgraded Delco 4x6 speakers, with separate tweeters, that sound pretty decent. I have a pair from an '86 Buick LeSabre with the Concert Sound II option, and they sound much better than the normal ones.

its a six and half inch bazooka.. my g/f gave it to me
so nice
also its running off my stock deck and it sounds fine..(thats how unchoosey i am about bass)
i used to have a system in my 85 z and look what happened to it (view sig)
i think im gonna find the cheapest sony amp and hook up to the tube.. then a pair of cheap 4" speakers for the front will do..

I think the Kappa 4x6s are pretty good. Others have had problems though.

After I make a newer, tighter fitting trim plate it'll look even better. In the car it looks 100% better than in the pics because there's no flash bulb in my car lighting up the mechanical crap in the gap. This took me about 3 hours to install in my IROC. The same installation took me 2 days in my firebird because there is a lot less room in the firebird, and it was also the first time I had done the installation.

wow those are some interesting pics. I too am interested to know what brought that on. I never thought Id see Blaupunkt and McIntosh in the same post either, yikes. I have an Alpine 7949 deck and ERA-G320 (graphic) EQ in my caddy and made a custom mounting plate for it and it looks really nice.. It just takes some time to get it right.
jim: good job... thats looking damn good.
now about my car..
i dont know why it happened..
i dont know who did it..
i dont remember pissing anyone off.. hell i dont even go to school.
i dont remember having any enemies of any kind..
but because of the writing on the car i assume the either got me mixed up or were just a bunch of little kids trying to scare somebody :\
this is to everyone that even has a deck..
get an alarm!
i currently have an alarm, a remote pager for when the alarm goes off, SEVERAL kill switches... and a few other things i do when i leave the car for a while

Jim: what deck do you have? it looks like the X915.
I have the X811 and I mounted it flush as well, but took a different approach to get it in there.
A GM install kit that was adjustable: comes in two parts, an outer that mounts to the console, and an inner sleeve, in which the head units metal sleeve mounts.
I cut the outer sleeve along the bottom edge and screwed the inner sleeve to it flush with the outer sleeve. The cutting was to move the head unit down. Then I used a heatgun to gently move the plastic heating vents enough to clear the unit and mounted everything up. With a square of black vinyl to finish up the front, it looks like a beaut.
I really like that false panel idea BTW. That's kickass. Does it just lay there, or is it pressfit or have some provision to snap it in place?

Jza, that's a Kenwood Excelon PS907. It is the top of the line excelon deck from the first year. It's a pre amp-only deck with a zero-bit noise gate, blah blah blah.
The stock faceplate basically just falls into place. It's not held in by anything, but it doesn't go anywhere unless I try driving with it there. I've got a camaro face plate that I've got to drim down and assemble, but for now the old Pontiac one works fine.
