install kit question

I am going to get a new head unit for my formula. Is there an faceplate that I can put in that will make a one din head unit flush with the dash. I really hope that one will fit, I don't like the ones that stick out.

I don't think Metra or anyone else has one for a flush fit.I believe the reason for this is because there is a metal bracket back there that prevents an aftermarket unit from sliding that far back. You can remove that bracket and get a flush kit.If you do that, try Metra's kit # 4500.It's a GM universal kit.You should be able to make that one fit in flush.

Sinking a deck flush into the stock location in a firebird is going to require some re-working of the center console, including cutting in the back and the relocation of one bracket.

When I install head units into third gens, the only time I have to cut anything is if the customer wants a flush fit.And then all I have to do is remove the rear bracket that held up the rear of the factory radio.Other than that,it shouldn't need to be modded much more.

I have a Kenwood flush-mounted in my Formula...it takes a little extra effort but it's not that hard.

First of all, you'll need to buy the proper kit. It's part number 99-4544, made by Metra. You probably can't find it at AutoZone, so you'll have to go to Circuit City or Best Buy or a local shop and fork over $16-20 (ripoff) for it. But you can still buy the wire harness (and antenna adapter, if needed) for a reasonable price at AutoZone.

The 99-4544 kit comes in a huge plastic bag with many parts. There are different faceplates available...1/2", 1", and a flat one, which is the one you should use. Read the instructions and it will show you how to put the kit together. Here's another tip: Before you insert the metal mounting sleeve for your radio, color the edges with a black permanent marker, so you don't see any metal when you're done.

Remove your old radio, and get your new DIN radio in your hand (all by itself, with no kit or wires attached to it). Center the radio in the hole in your dash, and try to push it back so it sits flush. You'll notice that it won't go back all the way, because it hits the mounting boss where the back of the factory radio goes. This is the part you'll have to trim.

I simply removed the radio console from the car and cut away the extra plastic on the workbench with a Dremel tool, but if you have small enough hands you can probably do it inside the car. Also, the plastic you'll be cutting also holds the radio console to the car, so you can't just cut all of it off; you have to just trim away as much as you can.

With your new radio in hand, keep cutting little by little until you have enough depth. Make sure you allow a little extra for whatever wires and plugs have to go back there.

I hope I didn't make this sound too difficult; I'm just trying to give you all the details. It took me only about twenty minutes extra to flush-mount my radio and it was well worth it. I do it on nearly all my installs at work as well.

Chris

Metra really needs to make a different dash kit for our cars. Their dash kit for new malibus is awesome. You don't even use the trim ring around the face because of the way the kit forms around the opening. I'm going to try to get a custom dash kit made up for my IROC, cause the metra one looks too cheesy.
