Speaker Frequency Ranges
I need to purchase some in-line cross overs (bass-blockers)and would like to know which ones to get. Can someone tell me what is the best to use on a 4in. speaker, and also a 6 1/2in. speaker. My problem is that WAY to much bass is comming from these small speakers, therefore I can't turn up the voulme because of distortion. I don't have a sub control so my low end is hurting because, the small speakers bottom out before the sub can generate some power.

It really depends on more than one variable, but in most cases I prefer to use a 300hz high pass on 4" speakers and around a 150hz on 6". In my 86 I'm running my 4x6 plates at an 80hz high pass because that's what the amp has available and because that pass is adequate for the volumes I use.

I know this isn't the response you are looking for, but there are better and possibly cheaper alternatives. I personally use the Pioneer DEH-7200. This has built HP and LP filters as well as Sub remote and a lot of toys to modify the sub and it freq range. I recommend this or the DEH-9200 as it can do the same and it is all built in. If your head unit is not of very high quality, I would recommend upgrading to one of these models or of another brand with similar features. I do not know the price on the bass blockers, but I know the crossovers at my store are over $100 each. For that price range, at two sets, the head unit looks cheaper and cheaper. I do not know if this is exactly the response u were looking for, but it's my .02

Jim, When you mention variables, are you speaking of componet speakers vs. co-axles? These speakers are the Infinity Kappa 4in and 6 1/2in. so I believe that the tweeters already have a cross over built in. It was the main speaker I am concerned with.
I really like my deck, It's a Sony and it's pretty nice. It just doesn't have those adjustable controls you mention.

With variables, I mean power handling of the speakers, their physical size, how much power they are getting, their impedance at the specific cross over frequency (this one is the toughest one to get) and personal preference. They all play a role, but for the most part passive filters are a crap shoot anyway, so precision isn't usually high on the priority list.

putting a capacitor in line with the positive lead to the speaker will block DC and lower f's ,even though I am an electronic tech,I don't know of the correct micro farrad rating off hand.,I'll look up the formulas and post them sometime.the f's combined with the uF rating will cause "capacitive reactance" the lower the f's go,but pass higher f's right through like it wasn't even there,caps are $1.50 or somthing like that at radio shack.however an added inducter coil to pass bass to ground after the cap would be better. tuning the capacitance and inductance of a good crossover network requires some math....so I'll dust off the ol' univac tonight and get to work

I tried to get some caps at radio shack, a couple years ago, and the ones they had just plain sucked. I would recomend going to a reputable electronics store.
