Head unit RMS max
Head unit RMS max
Hey, whats the deal with headunits ratings. What is the whole max thing. I knwo with speakers that the max power is what it can handle at a spike or some deal, what does it mean with the head unit since that is putting out the power. Also I am thinking of getting a Alpine 7863 rated at 60 watts X 4. What do you think it really puts out.
Thanks
Jason

For quality decks, 1/2 peak power is about the RMS power output. For low quailty decks, about 1/3 peak.

A regular deck is limited to around 18 to 22 watts RMS. The Alpine deck uses an internal transformer to up the voltage to 17 volts, so the output is a little higher, possibly 30 watts per channel on a good day. More powerful than a normal deck? Yes. As powerful as a good stand alone 30 watt amp? Not even close. The stand alone amp is a higher current design (except the cheapo units of course).
