Lights and music

I was at this shop and i over heard this guy saying he was putting lights on the inside of his car under the dash. And he said the lights would dance with the music. For one is this possible and two is it illegal. And how would you hook something like that up.
Thanks

Check your crutchfield catalog they sell systems that control up to 18 neon lights. the only downside is the lights that they sell only plug into your lighter outlet.

simple solution.
cut the plug, connect it to a switch, connect to the battery.

I've got a 20" sound activated neon from Street Glow, you can set the senstivity on it and make it blink with the bass, I really like it, if your in a dark area with no lights its kinda nice.. right now its just sittin on top of my box which is in the backseat (for another week or 2) and im going to get 2 more for underneath the dash if they come in smaller size with sound activation..jcwhitney sells neons at a pretty good price, the one I bought was only like 30 or 35 ish I believe.

edit: also found this on the site..its no cheap..its 34 bucks but you can hook up all your lights to it and it dances to music..http://store.yahoo.com/rodi/ld2000.html

The neons that dance to the music or any light that acts this way for that matter has a quartz crystal like CamaroZ_85 was trying to get at. This is the same crystal thats found in car alarms that senses vibration to set the alarm off. All you need is some decent bass and the lights will pick up the vibrations and "dance."

ya but this isnt just by the pounding, that little thing i showed is just a box that picks up the lower frequences, like subwoofer ones and moves the lights to that. they also are programmable to diff. frequencies..vocals, subs, mids..etc. if im not mistaken. they used to have that, dunno if they do anymore
