Subs in the rear speaker location?

Since the placement of the rear speaker in our cars are only for fill, has anyone trid to fit subs in where the 6x9's go by designing a new bracket or plate? What's the biggest speaker that can be installed with a small amount of fabrication?

Kicker and possibly other vendors sell 6x9 subs that should fit without modification, as long as the mounting depth is sufficient. I've thought about doing this but I'm concerned about excessive vibration. Foam baffles would probably be a good idea.

I stuffed a pair of 8's in my firebird. I used them for mid-bass though. To use that location for subs, you should really build a rigid fiberglass enclosure behind them, which can be quite difficult. At the very least, the quarter panels should be heavily dynamatted and use a free-air sub, but since the back area is open to the back of the car, your results will be marginal at best unless you seal the enclosure.

as i was putting my new speaker covers on toady i had a thought . "hmm subs would kick butt righ here but how then a bolt of lightning seriosly thunder storm it all came to me." I was looking in the news paper a few months ago and saw some 10in sqare subs . I think they are made by kicker. They might fit in the square holes with little or no cutting. I would call a sound shop and find out about this sq sub. I have never had the speakers out of the back, some one kindly upgraded them to some nice kenwoods but i know that the space is square behind them so i would check this out. BTW does anyone know what size hole is behind the plastic cover?

i just made some adapter plates awhile ago and feel that there is too much space back there, so my question is, should i use exapnding foam to fill the bottom, and should i dynamat before foam? thnx,
