Where should I look for an alternator?

I am needing to start the process of looking for a high output alternator before I kill my electrical system. I need probably a 180-190 Amp alternator. Where would be some good places to look and how much should I expect to pay for it? By the way, I am going to be getting an Optima Yellow Top battery here in the next couple of weeks.

Matt

Hello,

I think your best bet is to find an auto electrical shop near you and have them build one to meet your needs. The ones from Auto Zone and Pep Boys and the like won't put out that kind of juice. As far as cost, I had mine upgraded to 140 amp for $60.00.

Good luck,

Ken

I would suggest looking at www.premierpowerwelder.com/specs/ppwspecs.html for a 160-170 ampere continuous and hot rating for $400-500 (charging, not welding).

Some "less-than-reputable" manufacturs will often not rate their alternators both continuous and hot in order to acheive a higher output (and get more sales). It costs more money to make an alternator output this amount both continuously and while hot.

This site makes high output alternators for mobile welding, but also for high output charging. If nothing else, it should be a good reading.

You may also want to consider a local high-end mobile audio store in your area if you have any. They often sell high output alternators for about the same price ($300 and up). A local alternator/starter shop would be another possiblity.

Summit sells one(SUM-G1669 for pre 88 GM for $170) for 140 amperes or an early style GM made by "Powermaster" (PWM-37294) 140 ampere for $200.

Yet another source would be to pick up a high-end audio magazine. They often contain manfactures of high output alternators.
