A cap is like a reserve of power so it just runs in line with your power wire. The cap has a positive and a negative. run the power wire across the positive side and ground the negative side. As with all grounds the shorter the better. And you will want to place the cap as close to the amp as possible so when it hits that bass note it can draw the power as quickly as possible. A cap will help a clipping amp when running full range.
Considering the danger of hooking up caps and I haven't played with one for a while you might double check my instructions not that I dont trust myself I just dont want any blame. You know, C.Y.A.

So basically i ground the negative, run the power wire to the positive, then run another power wire from the cap to the amp. Makes sense and sounds easy enough. Is this right?

Caps are wired in parallel. One wire (4g) to + side on distribution block, other wire to - side of the block. Be sure to properly charge the cap before hooking up the power lines or else you'll welding the screws to the top of it.

Mista mentioned a very important step. You must charge the cap first, otherwise it will act like a direct short. Most new caps come with a resister to use when charging the cap. I use a test light. Hook the ground up, then instead of hooking the power directly to the cap, hook the power to one side of the test light or resistor, and touch the other side to the cap. The resistor sucks because it gets hot and you don't really know when it's done. With the test light, it stays nice and cool, and when the light goes out, you know it's charged. Then hook the positive directly to the cap and it'll all be peachy.
