Has anyone seen this yet?!

I was looking at a magazine (I think it was minitruckin) with a fellow stereo junky yesterday and saw something I've never seen. Atomic Loudspeakers just released a 24" sub that is supposed to be the equivilent of 8 15's! I heard that they are going for like 2 grand each or close to it. Their website is www.atomicloudspeaker.com but I have had trouble accessing it today. Has anyone else seen or heard about these? Later

Matt

That's a good question! I wish I had more info about it, which is why I posted this I guess. I would say it would be one powerful amp. Who knows.

U.S.Amps has long held the distinction of making the most powerful production car audio amplifiers in the world. The tradition continues with the new USA-800, a 3 Kilowatt 44 inch long monster of an amplifier with enough voltage and current to power your house! The USA-800 is based on the dual-board master / slave configuration that U.S.Amps introduced in 1992 with the 200HCA. This latest incarnation is bridgeable into two ohms, and features four eight gauge Esoteric Audio power and ground wires, as well as a pair of eight gauge speaker leads. Due to the extreme nature of this unit, it should only be installed by a qualified professional.

How many of you have ever heard an 18 inch sub? They sound amazingly loud on super low bass drops, but they can't fire quick and arent' very efficient in regards to space and power. I honestly don't think that there are very many practical applications for this sub. Mainly for show is my guess. That clarion sub was huge and i read a road test in Auto sound & Security and they said that it was just to big to use in anything but a Ford Econoline van or Chevy full size and that it was just to big to use for standard musical use.
My $.02 of course.

Yeah, I have heard of 18" woofers before, although I don't remember who made them. You are right though, they are not very practical unless you have a van, suv, or pickup with the subs in the bed. That is what my friend and I were talking about the other night, I mean for a 24" sub the box (top alone) would have to be like 26 x 26 or something. I'm sure it would need to be pretty deep also.

It doesn't sound like anything I'll be running out and getting, but pretty interesting. Oh, that amp (usa-800 or whatever) My lord that thing is powerful. It sounds like a pretty heavy duty piece.

I know Kicker use to made 18" subs. They required 3.0 cu. ft. air space. They built a Kicker Competition Van which was a Chev. Astro install was 9-18" Kickers(wall)Each powered by a Linear Power 5002. The front and rear fill consisted of total of 6-6 1/2" Kickers, 4-5 1/4" Kickers, and 8- Tweets. It was stated in Car Stereo Review the van was in a soundoff contest it viberated a ladies dishes out of her cabinets 2 blocks away. (The lady had called the Cops) I don't remember the watts of the db of it but it was bad***! But now they have one that hit 170.3db with 6-10's

IMO a 24" sub would probably sound like crap for most music. Its too big to move fast enough to have good punch or accuracy, but on the other hand it'll impress the hell outa people won't it?
