anyone install 4 inch components set in the dash??
I know the dash usually accepts 4x6 speakers, but I was wondering if anyone had installed a 4" component speaker (like from polk or boston)? what did ya have to do to get the speakers to fit?

Howdy there, I don't have components in my dash but I do have an old set of Infinity Reference that is similar, with a 4" midrange and a tweet. All I can say is you'd probably have to build a pretty good bracket to make them fit, or possibly modify a stock one in some way. I'm sure it can be done though. I've also got a bass blocker inline between the speaker and power source. I think when I revise my stereo I'll stick with those in the dash and forgo the kick speakers for a while longer, till I decide just how good the sound quality is. Later man
I put 4" speaker in the stock 4x6. I just made a custom plate that would hold the 4" using the stock 4x6 plate. Here are some pics of them.

Right on!!! those custom plates look awesome!! what material are they made out of? thanks for the help guys!! if everything goes as planned, i hope to have 4" Boston components in the dash (tweets in the corners), 5 and 1/4" Boston component set in the kickpanels, and Boston 6x9's as the mids. gonna run everything with a 6 channel nakamichi amp 100x6 rms @ 2ohms. i know its kinda crazy to run 3 sets of speakers for the high's but i love my music!! k den thanks!!

You can make those plates out of pretty much any material. I usually use wood because that's what I have lying around, but you can use ABS or even steel. If you want to, you can also offset the midrange toward the middle and you'll have room for the tweeter on that same plate. Just make sure that you'll have room in the dash to offset the mid. In 82-89 camaros it won't be much of a problem, but in firebirds and newer camaros modifications are usually necessary to accomodate larger speakers, especially if they bass driver is offset.

I disagree. For the most part, component systems tend to be of higher quality than coax speakers, especially the tweeter and the crossover. Obviously there are exceptions, but for the most part you have a much greater selection of better quality stuff when you use components. Any coax that is as good as a similar component set will cost as much too.
