Alpine and wiring harness
The alpine and a harness to fit my 85 IROC don't exactly match up. The Alpine has an orange wire marked 'dimmer,' but the harness to fit my car has an orange wire marked 'illumination' and an orange-white wire marked dimmer. Do I disregard one? If so, which one?

Wire the alpine wire to your "illumination" wire. When you turn your parking lights on, your deck will dim.

And the orange-white wire? Tape it off and disregard?
Also, the orginal Delco, aside from the three plugs--blue, white, and black--has a separate two wire plug. One of the wires is orange (illumination apparently), the other brown. The aftermarket harness has the orange wire, but instead of brown, the second wire is yellow. Is this a problem?

the extra little harness.....
the yellow wire coming out of the new plug supplies 12v constant for the memory. Just connect it to the Yellow wire on the Alpine.
BTW your power antenna may not work. The Alpine I just put in, D852, doesn't have enough juice. The stereo shop gave me a relay and wiring instructions. I've yet to get to it.

Thanks for the heads-up--my Alpine is the 855. I'm going to be unhappy as hell if the power antenna doesn't function without modification.

Hey, Mista,
The power antenna works fine--by the way, I didn't have to modifify the Alpine's bezel to make it fit properly. Cool piece of equipment!

Just out of curiosity, did you buy a wiring harness or are you doing a hack job?

If you bought a harness, you should just be matching the colors of the harness to the colors on the Alpine deck. They should be a direct match, then the harness will just plug into the factory plugs and you'll have no screwing around to do.

Yep, with the exception of one wire, the orange-white, the Alpine and after-market harness matched up, and it was 'plug and play.'

Jim, any idea then why my Alpine 852 won't work my power antenna??? Not enough power????
I hear the ant. get power for about 1/4 sec. then nothing.
FYI Pink from factory harness goes into blue on adapter harness which is hooked to the blue wire from the HU.

Mista, there might be something wrong with that radio. It should work fine.
