Time display on radio...

I'm considering replacing (it died) the radio/tape player on my '88 GTA with either a cd/tape/radio or just cd/radio.

I DO NOT like the wild displays some sytems have. I would like the display to 'fit in' with the other GTA gauges.

I prefer 1 1/2 din size but will consider others.

I REALLY want the clock/time to be displayed all the time like regular GM radios.

Any suggestions?

Allan posted a how-to on putting a late-model GM CD player in the third gen. Check it out here:

I'm pretty sure this is what I'll do as I don't care for all the wild displays either!

Thanks.

I saw that thread and if I remember correctly that swap was for a Camaro. Somewhere in there it was said it probably wouldn't fit a 'Bird.

It might be a bit different since you have that panel-hung stereo pod, but I bet you could do it! The newer radio is just a bit larger than what is already there.
My '83 has a console that is pretty similar to the Camaro.
Good luck!

Thanks.

I'll see what I can find out. I may have a line on a later model GM unit similar to the one described.

The radios mount the same way into the firebird as the Camaro. The only problem you'll have is that you'll have to cut away some of the heater duct passage and part of the plastic cross-piece at the back. It's probably easier to pull the center console out of the car to do it.
