Whats going on with my amp?

ive got a DHD power cruiser in the back of my firebird for my 12" sub (the lightning audio went back it crapped out) i was using it before... one day on the freeway the music was kinda loud, not really then boom, no more bass. went home turned off the car, now all it does is turn on for a sec, i hear about 1 sec worth of sub and it turns back off. i thought it was the remote turn on lead, i took it out and touched it to the terminal and it turns on for a sec, bass, then off. its mounted down in the well... i was running it bridged mono, its powering a mtx 12" 5000, 4 ohm svc. Any ideas? i have no more money for a WHILE..!

Sounds like the amp is overloading for some reason.

First thing to try is:
disconnect the speaker leads from the amp, and turn it on. If the amp comes on and stays on, then try a different speaker.
If you still have the problem, disconnect the poewr/ground/remote wires from the amp and run a wire directly from the battery to both the +12 and the remote terminal. Then run a wire from the - on the bat to the - on the amp.
If still it won't turn on and stay on, then the amp is fried.

I don't know anything about that amp. Is there a switch to run bridged/mono mode? Or did you just hook up - on one side, and + on the other?
Also, is it stable down to a 2 Ohm load? Because that SVC 4Ohm woofer would present a 2 Ohm load to each channel in that config.

Good luck,

Thomas.

there might be a short in the voice coil. or..once i saw one where a piece of metal (solder wire) had fallen and gotten lodged right across the two terminals (i've seen that twice actually, but the other time was on a starter relay).

try checking the resistance on the speaker. if it reads 00.00 there's an internal short and that's probably your problem.

Jza is right on; either you have bad wires down to the speaker's terminals, or the speaker is toast.

I would remove the wires from the speaker terminals and solder new ones on; then test. If the speaker still won't play, it's time to replace it.
