Yes it is possible. You will need to make an adapter plate to fit which ever size midrange you will get (6" or 5"). and then mound the tweeter above the mid.
I noticed you live in/near St. Louis, there is a Pro Audio stoe out be me in St. Charles that sells some very good component systems. CDT is my favorite and you can get a set with 6" mids for about $200 all the way up to about $400. If you're looking to spend less than that another brand, Memphis also makes very good speakers and are resonably priced.

Yeah CDT's awesome! That's what I have all around. This is just a coaxial, but it's pretty much the same idea as a component set, you'd just have to mount a seperate tweeter. Just take out the metal piece that that the 6x9 screws into (it's held in with 4 7mm screws), and use it as a stencil for making a new plate with your choice of hole size(s).
