My dead JVC KD-S550
My JVC has power, the display lights up, all volume functions etc.
work, the cd spins, the tracks change, but no volume comes out.
I believe the internal amp is cooked. It was only $140 two years
ago. I may have run a screw into the rear speaker wires when installing carpet
It has a 40X4 amp.
My question is: Is this worth repairing?
If not, what is the best CD receiver for around $150-?
Don't make fun of me because I'm not one of you high end guys on this board!

Not much available in the $150 range at all. Stepping up to $200 opens a lot of doors. At that price, you can get a decent Alpine, or a JVC SH55.

I wonder if the RCA outputs will still work? Then I could just buy an amp and run it through that.
Eric
BTW, I just ordered a Pro-Built street-strip trans and converter, so there went my $

Aftermarket radios will go into shutdown if any of the speaker wires are shorted, as in a screw going through the speaker wire.
If you have the equipment and know-how, bench test the unit. If not, do this:
Pull the radio from the dash. Leave the power hooked up, but cut all eight of the speaker wires. Find whatever junky old speaker you can, preferably with some wire coming from it to make things easier. Hook this one speaker to one of the outputs of the radio; does it work now?
If not, the radio is bad...but you should still test the RCA outputs before tossing it. If it does work with the single speaker, there's a problem in the car.
Let us know how the test turns out, and we'll help you from there.
