What amps is my stock deck?¿
Hey guys, how many watts is my stock deck on my 89 GTA. I have the deck that has the steering wheel controls on it. I just bought Pioneer three way 6x9's and Pioneer 4x6's. The 4x6 speakers say 65 watts on the box, and the three way 6x9 speakers say 220 watts max on the box, it also says 40 watts nominal. What does that mean? Will these speakers work okay with my stock deck and sound okay? I just want to keep things stock pretty much. My original speakers are shot. Do I need a small amp or will these speakers sound at least as good as the stock ones without an amp? Thanks for the help, I am stupid wen it comes to stereo equipment.

Your new speakers will work fine. I'm not about to really get into it but all manufacturers rate their peak power differently, and it's a bad spec to compare speakers by.
Your stock deck prolly puts out about (GUESS) 10 watts RMS, and MAYBE 25 peak ... at lower volumes your new speakers will sound better than the pervious ones, but as you crank it your stock deck will distort it's signal, and start putting garbage through your new speakers. But you should be fine as long as you realize the limits of keeping the head unit stock.
this is 1/2 opinion based, so i'm open to any corrections

Hey Jim, thanks for the help man. Would you recommend that I get a small amp just to give the new speakers some more power? If so, what size amp should I get, and how hard will it be to install? Will I have to frig up (cut and splice any wiring)? Because I really do not want to do that.
Thanks man!

Mike,
what follows is only my opinion, if not a strong one
I def wouldn't even bother going through the trouble of amp-img your new speakers if you're going to keep your stock head unit. While you can gain massive amounts of volume by hooking up an amp with a 'pac' adaptor to a stock head unit, the sound quality will be garbage.
To send a low-level signal to your amp (what it needs) your have to put an adaptor added onto your speaker wires to bring that high speaker signal down. Then, once in the amp, the signal is "amped" again back up to high level. This 'up&down' biz causes loss of a clear signal. this is also the same case with an amp that takes a highlevel input. only difference is it converts everything back and forth inside the amp.
If you wanna keep that stock radio the simple things to do without getting really into things are to get new speakers. Fortunately, you've already done that
If you really wanna try amping the speakers there's ways to do it where you won't mess anything up, but i'd vote for either changing the head unit first, or leaving it be w/ both new sets of speakers hooked up.
once again, hope this helps mike

Hey Jim, sounds good man. Thanks. I think I will just put the new speakers in and see what they sound like. It might be good enough for me. If they sound a little better than the garbage stock ones, I will be happy. I would love to change my stock deck, but won't do it because it works off the steering wheel. If there was a way to get a different deck to work with the steering controls, I would go for it and maybe put a decent sound system in. Thanks for the info Jim. Hows your car coming along man? I like those blacked out side lights! That looks Bitchen on your whitecar!
Later man
