Aside from the wiring being different between the 4th gen and 3rd gen, i can only think if one complication. You would have to find a head unit that does not have the crazy externally amped speakers. If there was a head unit that had the usual internal amp then the only thing you would have to do is wire it, and that is a peice of cake.

Not sure about the '94 radio you had there, but as far as third gen radios: GM had two different plug sizes throughout the late 80s - early 90s. The radios are 100% compatible, you just may have to wire yourself a plug adaptor to make the connection.

If you want something that looks stockish then get something for a much newer model... Just get a plug for the new one and graft it to the old one... wire colors will probably be the same.

IMHO you REALLY don't want an OEM CD player... if you get one for the 90-92 models, then it will be a POS guaranteed... that was when car CD players were in thier infancy. If you want something that looks good, find a Head unit designed to fit that space just right...

That's some strangeass info someone told you. The plugs in the 88-whatever third gens will only fit SOME of the newer delco stereos. Some of the newer ones will only fit if you grind off the little plastic rail guides on the plug piece. I don't know what sort of plug the 87 and older cars had, as mine was cut out when I got it, so can't help you there. Just check at a wrecker for a plug that'll fit up. I have a tape deck from a 98-ish GMC truck, and love it. The radio tuner is very strong, it looks pretty at home in a third gen, and it puts out plenty of power, to boot. These decks were designed to drive 8 speakers, IIRC.

They sell wiring adapters to put late model radios in early cars. I think I got mine from AutoZone for about $10. You simply plug one end of the adapter into your harness and the other end into the new radio. You also need an adapter for the antenna cable (early models use a larger connector), which they also sell at WalMart, AutoZone, or anywhere they sell radio install kits.

You need a CD that has ears like the Bose unit you linked to. Beware (as mentioned above) that Bose an Monsoon systems require an external amp. You could still use one if you get the factory amp as well, but I understand they are kinda crappy. The system I looked into had some speakers powered from the head unit and some powered from the amp. I think they used 2 6" speakers on left and right channels for sub woofers. You could use the head unit and buy an amp with high level inputs. This would allow you to install a real sub.

I put a '96 CD as found in most GM cars in my '87 Camaro. Besides the adapters mentioned, I had to ream out a couple of the mounting holes. I then bought a new 2000 Firebird CD w/equalizer thinking it would fit right in as well, but it didn't. I had to make several mods. The ears were too close to the face so I cut them off and made some new ears and pop riveted them on. I also had to grind a little extra sheet metal off the rear corners of the case and grind down the insde of the trim plate where it goes against the face of the radio. Anyway, it looks factory but took some time making it that way.
