Some advice from all the car audio nuts?

I have 2- 10" Kenwood Tornado subs. I bought a sub enclosure made for the back well, off of ebay. It is made out of 5/8 mdf. I was told that it has 1.025 cubic feet for each sub. But, it is a single chamber, so it does not have a wall to divide each sub. Kenwood recommends 1.0 cubic feet for a sealed enclosure and 1.1 cubic feet for a ported box. I would like to put two 3"x5" ports. Would this help, due to the fact of it being a single chamber box? I would like it to sound as clear and loud as possible, but I do not want any crosstalk. Thanks alot!

I was just thinking the ports would reduce the pressure in the box, by allowing the subs to breath. Does this sound right?

With a ported enclosure, it's important to make the box and the port size to closely match the manufacturer's suggestions unless you've got some good box modeling software. When you deal with ported boxes, little changes make a BIG difference in sound, so by having the box a little bigger, Kenwood's suggested port size would cause the tuned frequency to shift, which would make a mess. But, sealed enclosures are much, much more forgiving to size variations. In fact, in 99% of the subs out there, a sealed box that's a little bigger than their reccomendation will usually sound better. Most sub makers spec out a somewhat small box size because it helps to increase power handling, plus they boom a little harder, which is what most 16 year old sub-buyers want. For a better, more accurate smooth sound, a slightly bigger box is usually better.

Anyway, as long as you run both subs in mono, having a shared chamber doesn't matter. Just drop the subs in, wire it up up and see how you like the sound.

ported does not always give cleanest sound as well, so youd be happier with sealed.

If I remember right, ported boxes give a more "boomy" sound at the expense of clarity, while sealed boxed give "tighter" bass response. Ported=rap, bass, metal, etc. Sealed=classical, easy listening, non-bass-intensive music, etc.

Okay, you said the box has 1.025 cubic feet for each sub, but is not divided? Do you mean the total volume is 2.05 cubic feet? If so, if you build a sealed box, you should probably split it into two chambers. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought that two subs in a single chamber box only require the airspace required for one sub, meaning if your sub needs 1 cubic foot of airspace, and you have two subs, a single-chamber box for those subs should only be 1 cubic foot, but a two-chamber box should be 2 cubic feet (one on each side).

Nope. Each sub needs it's own ammount of airspace. Think of it this way. You have 1 10" sub. It has an area of 78 in^2. It exerts a pressure on the space inside the box. Then you add another 10" sub. Now you have double the cone area, 156 in^2. I'm not sure of the formula for pressure, but I believe that since the cone area is doubled, if you leave it in the same size box then the pressure will double also. You need twice the air space for the same pressure as with one sub so you produce the right sound. Even if the pressure doesn't really double, it does increase and you get the idead. Hope this helps.

Well, I bought the box off of a guy "Addicted2Audio" on Ebay. The guy's description said one chamber. But, he didn't give me that much information when I asked. So, I asked another guy on ebay, who was selling the same box, but for more money. (Like $20 more). He said that it did have the wall separating the subs(two chamber) and that it had 1.025 cubic feet per sub. So, I just have to wait and see when it comes in. I assume it is a total of 2.05 cubic feet, but I'm not sure about the dividing wall. Thanks for the replies!

ported boxes are generally used when you need loud bass without the low frequency extension. Ported boxes get much louder, but only over a small frequency range. Sealed boxes are more for the SQ type of guys, as they play lower, although do not produce the volume associated with ported boxes. Sealed enclosures are usually smaller, but as said before, are forgiving in their size. The bigger the box, the lower it will play, but the more power will be needed to play the same volume, due to the lack of air pressure pushing the cone back out. Hope that helped a lil

Ported boxes take some decent experience to get sounding right. Simply throwing a port into a box won't cut it; the length of the port and diameter both contribute to how the sound will change. Another thing to take into consideration is the volume that the speakers' magnets will displace. This might end up being about .1 cubic feet but will vary depending on the magnet size. Contact Kenwood for exact measurements. Remember that a divider will also displace some of the volume in the box so by the time you're finished subtracting all that space you may have significantly changed the way the box will perform.

Which model number kenwood tornado's do you have? I am a Kenwood dealer and ther are two different subs available, one for small enclosur and one for large enclosure. If you give me the model I can tell you which enclosure you need.

I have the p/n 2503's. I know all the specs on the subs, though. The box will be here on wed. the 11th. So, we'll see when it comes in.
