Sub box Idea, anyone tell me if it will sound good or not?
Ok, I was talking with my dad and he said that if you take the "ultimate sub box" and move the sub from the top, to the side facing the trunk latch, that it will sound a whole lot better cuz the bass will roll off of that area. You could set the sub in about 4 inches and put plexy glass in front of it and make it bandpass also. I think you would want to inset the sub anywayz to give the bass a little room to move. Can anyone tell me if this is true or has anyone ever tryed it b4 and have pics? Any help would be appriciated. Here is a pic to kinda show what I am talking about. (I think this is CAMp30's box I used to photoshop, so if you don't want me to use it CAMp30, just tell me and I'll remove it)

you have to realize that the well isnt very wide. i put mine facing up because i was worried the sub would possibly hit the back if the cone was playing. however, in respect to the better sound, you actually get better sound when the sub is firing at the glass. you allow the sound waves (which are larger the lower the frequency) to travel a farther path, giving it more room to develop. one way to experience this is by playing your music with the windows up then down. the bass will be louder with the windows down because you are allowing the waves to develop more

Thanx for the info. I thought that it might be that way, but I'm always open to suggestions and new ideas, and that was a new idea. I think I'm just gonna go the way everyone else has and build it facing the glass. But what about angling the box? Like higher on the back and slanted down, or visa versa? I have seen boxes like it, but never if they are better or worse or what. Here is a quick paint drawing of what Im talking about.
I have a box made exactly how u described.... I believe yer dad knows whut hes talking about.... I had a box facing up and it doesnt pound nearly as much with it facing towards the back... The only problem with this idea, is that it cause alot of rattle at the rear of yer car.... U hear it louder outside and it hits harder inside... I make my awnings vibrate on my house like hell....

I built this box for a friend's car a couple years ago. Considering that it's an 8 ohm sub and a small amp, it pounds. The sound quality was good too.
Mines similar to that set up but mine has open space on all sides of the well..... Its not all enclosed like that.... So i guess the bass fires up, out, and forward.... It pounds hard tho...

Ok, so I went out and played around with my subs a bit. First I left my sub where it is, right behind the back seat, pointing up into the glass. Sounded good. Then I moved it all the way back like it would be in the box that I posted. Sounded a little better. Then I put the sub in the well with the sub pointing towards the back, right in front of the area where the power latch is and DAMN. When I make my box the sub will definately be pointed like I showed in the picture. It was loud, and bounced the chain around my neck. I recomend it.

the reason i left mine facing was mostly due to the fact that i want to make my system stealth. i'm hoping to find a locking well cover to be able to cover everything up. if i cant find one, i may just go the cheap way and build one....

the idea behind "stealthing" a system is making it less noticible. if you mounted your sub the way you mentioned, yes its more hidden, but more of the well has been filled with a box. my whole plan was to make the box as low as possible, that way taking up less of the well. seeing that i was able get away with using only the bottom of the well, i still have enough clearance to mount the locking cover that came on some cars (when i get the money). for now, the box is low enough that it is pretty unnoticeable at night, except for the bight silver sub. but i'm working on it....
Screw the stealth **** man.... U guys dont get it.. If yer going around pounding yer system, they know u have a system no matter whether they can see it or not... They will follow u home without u knowing and when they feel the time is right, they will strike.... I know how the real deal works.. Im not a thief but know many many and many.... Invest in an alarm and be safe... They wont touch yer system if they know u have an alarm.... Just make the alarm light very visable..

if stealth wont work, neither does an alarm. if a thief wants somethin, a thief is gonna get it. but if you make it more difficult to find and more difficult to get at (bolt stuff down, use specialty screws, etc), a thief may think twice. but also be smart about playing your system. dont show off to everyone who wants to know. being responsible is the best thing.

Stealth is your best defense right behind your intelligence. If you go slamming through the hood, your crap's getting stolen regardless of what it looks like, but if you've got brains enough to keep it turned down in your hometown, and you don't show it off to all of the friends of your friends of your friends, and it's out of sight, chances are it'll be there in the morning.
True True, but the people I know, if they cant get yer subs or amps unbolted, they will punch holes in the subs so they are no good to u anyways, for the amps, theres not much u can do...

i agree with jim. but, for my plans, there is going to be no way to even know there is a sub there, let along get to it. mine sits low enough to clear one of the locking well covers. flip it up when i'm driving, flip it down when i'm parked. not a clue its there, outta sight, outta mind. theives want to be quick about what they are stealing. if it cant be easily accessed, they skip it. i know this becuase i myself had my old system stolen. what did they go for? the easy stuff: deck, amps, and subs. what was left? the hidden or hard to reach stuff, like my speakers. the quicker the job, the easier the get away. i plan on making my stuff impossible for the quick steal. amps are being mounted into back seat, sub bolted to bottom of well and covered by hidden cover. i also plan on getting specialty screws (like triangle tip or other) or using solder and filling in the spot altogether. make the lowlifes work for there money

Read the whole page. You'll learn quite a bit. I did.

I agree with Jim as well. If you dont have tint on the hatch, a stealth system is your best bet to deter any thief passing by that didnt hear you pull in. To protect yourself the best, I think a combination of smarts (like Jim said, turn it down when you're getting near an area to park, and also park in smart places), stealth install, professionally installed alarm, and shaved door handles / hatch keyhole will protect you. IMHO that is the best combo because the only way in is to break glass (noisy).
If u lean yer stomach up against the window, while sticking the flathead in the top of the window right near the t top, than pull back, it will pop the window and u wont hear to much because yer stomach stops most the noise.... I hear about these little tricks everyday..
that article posted is very true. In my corsica, at first I thought the bass would be loudest with the sub in the trunk facing the front of the car, or towards the back seat. I couldnt believe the difference when I turned it around so the sub was facing the back of the car, it was amazing. So now its facing the back of the car, as close as possible to the trunk. Heres a pic, I know I know, the box isnt carpeted yet but as I said before, its sealed and its solid, and I am the only one that sees it.

This is true the subs do sound better when facing backwards and right up against the body, It also makes ur hole car shake. I found this out in a corsica too, but it didnt work for very long because my subs made my tail lights fall out

Hate to bring up an older topic...but if the thief wants it, they'll get it. Mine was all taken, broken glass in broad daylight in a busy store parking lot. Proffessional alarm, limo tint in the back.
Some tips: (straight from the guy who was supposed to be watching over the cars in the parking lot)
1. Park far away from the road (especially if near an onramp)
2. Park up front, in cars if necessary (I hate to)
My tips:
3. Detachable face is security, take it with you!
4. Don't mount your amp to your box (even less for them to struggle with.)
5. If you've got that much stereo in your daily driver, get a beater car. Sucks not driving in style all the time...but better than getting your stuff jacked.
I've also got a post in the body/interior forum, looking for some seats. Any help appreciated.

Alarms are only as good as the
person who hears them and the person that hears them and cares
Invest in an Alpine Remote Pager
alarm.
You can sit it besides your bed and
rest assured if the central air kicks
on when your sleeping, ,you dont
have to sweat thinking you might
not hear the alarm go off.
Second..
Tint the rear hatch, and use the cargo cover.. , mount your stuff tight!
VERY IMPORTANT IF YOU HAVE SYSTEM!
IS THIS!!!!!!!!!!!
DISCONNECT THE POWER DOOR LOCK SWITCHES ON THE DOORS INSIDE!!!
THE WAY TO GET IN OUR CARS I WAS TOLD BY A PROFESSIONAL THIEF
IS TO PULL THE WINDOW OUT AND REACH IN AND HIT THE UNLOCK BUTTON! MAKE THE BUTTON NOT WORK, AND YOU ARE OK.. YOU COULD ALSO CUSTOM FABRICATE SOMETHING THAT JUST BLOCKS SO YOU CANT GET TO IT FROM THE TOP, OR BLOCK THE MANUAL LEVER. AND DISCONNECT THE POWER ONES.
USE YOUR ALARM REMOTE TO UNLOCK THE DOORS, AND IF YOUR IN THE CAR, JUST USE THE MANUAL LEVER
I SUGGEST REMOVING THE TRUNK LOCK ALL TOGETHER , AND ADD THE RELAY TO YOUR ALARM SYSTEM TO HAVE REMOTE TRUNK RELEASE....
IF SOMEONE KNOWS WHAT THEY ARE DOING THEY GET IN THE HATCH BY HAVING THAT LOCK.
UNFORTUNATELY.. IT WOULD BE LOUD.. BUT IF THEY WANTED TOO.. THEY COULD BUST THE GLASS ON THE HATCH...... MAN THOSE ARE EXPENSIVE...... AND THAT WOULD SUCK......
DONT INVEST TOO MUCH IN THE SYSTEM.. INSURANCE COMPANIES DONT COVER A WHOLE HELL OF A LOT..... I FOUND THIS OUT THE HARD WAY.. I AM ALREADY WAY OVER BOARD
ALWAYS TAKE THE FACE OFF AND WITH YOU
AYWAYS TAKE THE RADAR DETECTOR WITH YOU, OR VELCRO IT SOMEWHERE CONCEALED WHEN YOU TAKE IT DOWN, ,UNDER THE DASH OR SOMETHING
BRING YOUR CD'S IN, LEATHER JACKETS, OAKLEY SUNGLASSES ETC..
THATS JUST AN EXTRA REASON FOR THEM TO SAY SCREW IT, LETS GET THIS ONE..
GO TO EXTRA EXTREMES WHEN MOUNTING THE HEAD UNIT.. DONT BE LAAZY.. MAKE IT SO YOU CANT EVEN GET THIS THING OUT WITHOUT 45 MINUTES OF ****IN AROUND.... I KNOW ITS A BITCH TO FIGURE OUT WAYS TO SECURE IT GOOD.. AND YOU GET LAZZY.. BUT DUDE......... DO YOU LIKE YOUR DECK!!!????????
