System layout

This is my first system in my car and this is my setup idea, I have Infinity 4 x 6 on the dash
6-3/4" Midbass Speakers Kicker Resolution and 5-1/4" Midrange Speakers in sail panels middle the car.
powered by a Sony XM-475GSX 75W x 4 Car Amp
2- 12" jbls in a custom box powered by Sony ES XM-6001GXD 300W x 1 Car Subwoofer Amp. Does this make any sense, please help.

I sayn your speakers are good to go and a nice setup at that. I personally would up the amp power to your subs. That is very little power and you may blow them due to a lack of power.

Sounds fine

If tuned and set correctly shoud sound fine, and no problem hurting subs, most common cause of speaker failure is distortion often caused by lack of power as stated above. Yours should be fine, use the same common sense you would driving your car.

Me common sense ha, my speakers will surely be blown. This is a pic of the speaker box I am making for two 12" subs. Almost done, I am going to carpet the outside of the box and apply laquer paint on the top of the box to match the exterior of my car.

I've got a question about "underpowering" your subs, you say that when you underpower them they could blow or whatever, then why don't my subs blow everytime i turn down the volume? Thats the same thing as hooking up a weak amp right?

It's like trying to drive a Geo as though it were a Camaro, they will both go 80mph but the Camaro will do it all day long under any situation. When you try and drive a sub w/o enough power you start to distort them which is the main cause of speaker failer
Hope this helps, remember "distortion kills"

That makes sense Matthew 4:19, how many amps would you recommend for 2 12" subs, and do I need 2 amps for each sub? Thanks Belker

You don't NEED and more power than you already have (300w). I have 150w X 2 running 2 10's. It'll shake every part of the car. It'll also so louder then I can measure with my radio shack SPL meter. It is loud enough to cause hearing damage. 300w is enough for any SENSIBLE person to run subs. But what is a sensible person?

Are you gonna compete in SPL competitions? Do you have a friend who brags about his system and you "just gotta" have a louder one than his? Are you intent on cause yourself hearing damage? Or do you just "need" to have your subs play as loud as they can? Any of these are good reasons to have as much power as you can get. There is no such thing as too much power (within certain constraints).

What it boils down to is this - You've admitted that this is your first system, you're building the box and probably haven't even heard those subs in that box in your car with that amp ... so finish the box, install the subs, connect the amp you have, and give it a listen.

Does it sound good enough or loud enough to satisfy you? If so, forget what other people say because there will always be something better or louder or cooler. If you're not satisfied THEN you can try to figure out what you can do different to make it better. For instance, maybe soundproofing your car would be better than more/bigger amps. Maybe different subs would be better than more/bigger amps. ... and so on.

I'm not saying there would be no benefit to having more power ... just, if I were you I wouldn't worry about it right now.

I am just looking for good sound and clarity, all I want is the speaker and amp to handle the peaks without distorting. I am not the type to really show off my system heck I am even too shy to drive with my t tops off. I just want to listen to some led zep and pink floyd and hear every sound and enjoy it. I have been a 2 way radio and police siren/ light installer for 15 years and for once want to give car sound a try.
