My first carb rebuild what should I know???

My victim is a holley 650cfm quadrajet replacment. What should I be aware of and look for the carb appears to be in A-1 shape but I would feel better if it was rebuilt and I want to learn something rather than paying some one to do it.
Thanks

You'll be able to pick up a Holley Trick Kit from your local speed/performance shop. When in doubt-consult a shop manual the has the rebuild instructions for the 650 quad. The job will be fairly simple, although tedious at times. Hint-be sure not to use a putty knife of similar to scrape off gasket material ( it puts scratches and pits in sealing surfaces). You can buy a few phenalic scrapers (looks like wood, or a piece of paneling even, but is durable) to remove old gasket material.

Sorry forgot to mention- the Holley kit generally only supllies minor parts like gaskets. For parts like jets, power valves, etc., you'll have to buy separately. I don't know how big a job you have there, if it is just a refresh or a total tear down, gut out, and make better than brand new job. I couldn't tell you how long the latter would take- I haven't played with my old quadrajet yet. Make sure you have a nice clutter-free, clean workspace- you don't want to lose any of those tiny screws(or have them conveniently roll behind the tool chest). Let me know what you want to do exactly and I'll see what kind of info I can find for you.

Do you think that I should replace the jets? Do they go bad? I was wanting to replace gaskets and float I knew that the float did not come with the kit but I didnt know that the jets didnt. What would be the suggestion for a carb that has sit for about 3 years but it looks like new?
Thanks

Use spray on gasket remover for the gaskets, shouldn't have to scrape hardly anything.

The key to rebuilding is getting everything clean. Buy a gallon size tub of Carb and Parts Cleaner, and soak all the parts in it overnight. It's the easiest and most effective way. Also, grab a can of spray carb cleaner, and blast out every small passage you can get to.

Holly sells rebuild kits, and Trick kits. Trick kits are only a couple bucks more, and come with more and better stuff, well worth it. Just take everything apart, clean it, and put it back together the same way with the new stuff...simple

No, jets don;t go bad, and the kit will come with a new PV.
