Q-Jet is idling way to high! (attn Ed or Damon)
Ok when i start my car from dead-cold the idle kicks up to around 2000-2500 rpm and will stay there way to long..when i give it gas to kick it down, the idle either stays at the same level or increases. I really don't feel like having my car overheat in my garage, and i'm getting tired of putting it into reverse at that speed cause i'm afraid of grenading my tranny and rear-end. Any idea why my idle is so high. When the car is started warm, the idle stays around 500 rpm which is a little low for me since the car seems about to stall. After driving for a bit it settles around 650 rpm. Could i have a bad choke elementor a jammed high idle linkage? The carb was rebuilt a while ago, but this problem has just really started lately. I have no thermac since i run an open element, but this is the summer so i doubt that is causing any probs. Would really like some advice. Thanks guys

I'm neither Ed nor Damon, but it sounds like your choke pull-off isn't doing its job. It's a vacuum servo on the front passenger corner of your carb. It either isn't working at all, or is not pulling hard enough to bring the idle cam down.
With the engine cold and air cleaner off, have someone start the car for you while you watch the stem on the pull-off. If it doesn't move in (forward) when the engine starts, then you've got a bad diaphragm in the pull-off (assuming the hose is still hooked up). If it starts to pull, but can't pull in far enough, it's weak. If it pulls in all the way but doesn't pull the high idle cam down far enough (the throttle has to be blipped to allow the cam to drop), it needs to be adjusted. If the cam simply does not drop, it may just be sticky.
You can also do these checks with a hand vacuum pump if you have one.
Doesn't sound like a major problem. Hope this helps.

An '86 LG4 does not have a hot air choke. It's electric.
Even if that wasn't working correctly, the RPM's should drop down after you tap the throttle just after you start it because of the choke pull-off. Staying up as the engine warms up is the condition that would be caused by a choke not warming up, but that's not the symptoms Dana described.

Check the vacuum can first as 57kid describes. If it's OK then adjsut the high idle speed. At idle speeds you will see a screw underneath the choke linkage on the pass side of the carb, underneath. Look for it standing in front of the engine. It's a touchy adjustement- a 1/4 turn makes a big difference.

It is possible that the choke/fast idle cam itself is sticky as well, that happens sometimes. You can try giving it a good bath in carb cleaner (tip - put a rag under it so you don't have huge puddles of carb cleaner on your intake) If it still does it, you have to take it apart and make sure nothing has any burrs or anything hanging it up, clean it up and put it back together.
Also, 22-2500 is a very high fast idle speed, i'd lower that a bit on principle alone.

I had that same problem before. It was funny the throttle got stuck at the gas station so I rev'd it up to make it go down but it went up. I kept revving it and it got higher and higher. Finally when it was at about 4-5,000 rpm I said screw this and turned the key off. Everybody was looking at me like I was crazy. I looked under the hood and the throttle on the carb was sticking. I went inside and bought some WD40 and sprayed it good and I havent had a problem since.
