70's Model Rochester? 80's?
I have a 4 barrel Rochester carb just sitting around that I pulled from the dumpster while doing community service back in high school (6 years ago). Anyhow, I believe that it is from a second gen camaro and I was wondering if this is compatible with my car (in the sig) and whether it would be worth rebuilding and selling or just hanging on to it in case I ever need another carb?? I don't have the part number on me... where would it be on the carb if it is there?

this website will help you decode the numbers on the carb.
www.oldengine.org/unfaq/leadfoot/qjet1.htm
As for will it work? Since you don't have the original qjet on the car, I assume you are not using the computer, so I think it can work, but I'm sure someone else will know for sure.

I went online last night to decode the carb and this is what the numbers tell me in theory:
7043250 RA
Carb is off of a 1973 Oldsmobile w/automatic tranny... numbers also confirm that it is a q-jet... that would coincide with the quadrajet emblem on the side of the carb
So how would I know what engine this was used for? How compatible is it with my car and were carbs computer controlled in 1973?
One odd thing I found is that the carb manufacturing date is Jan 7, 1974... does this mean they were building 73 Olds' in 74?
How much is this worth rebuilt?

Cars were not computer controlled in the 70's. Also if the carb was computer controlled (which it is not) it would have the Throttle Position Sensor plug AND the Mixture Control Solenoid plug (both on the computer controlled qjet) which look like electonic plugs.
As for what car. Who knows? Any Olds in 73 or 74 which used a 4 bbl carb. I guess you could research Olds engine combos for those years to narrow it down.
As for worth, if you rebuilt it, it would be a great learning experience, but as for actual value it wouldn't be worth much. To check current value go to www.ebay.com and do search for rochester or qjet or q-jet and see what their economic value is.
Hope this helps.

Might do me better to use it and sell the edelbrock
I do like how it runs right now, might not want to mess with it...
How much are rebuild kits?

If your car runs better w/ the edelbrock then keep it. You know "if it ain't broke...", anyway the edelbrock is a better carb than that 70's qjet. Like I said, rebuild the qjet for experience or just sell it as is on ebay. You can get a couple of bucks. Maybe someone is doing a numbers matching resto on their Olds and is willing to pay big bucks for an authentic carb for their car.

I think I'll rebuild it and keep it for sentimental value... I have defended the "usefulness" of keeping this carb for too many years to just up and sell it... I stuck with it even when I didn't own a V8 engine...

Damon is right.I've got a few old q-jets laying around, and the linkage for the 73 and older models are totally incompatible with our cars.I am running A late 70's model and it works great however.I used to have a Edelbrock 600cfm on my car but i could never get the fuel mileage i get with the q-jet.I also could never get the tv cable right with the edelbrock,i don't know if the arc of the linkage was longer or shorter, but i went back to the rochester and it's back to normal. You wouldn't have this problem with a 5 speed, but i wonder if other automatic trans guys have had this problem.....
