A buddy of mine just bought a new elderbrock performer for his 85 305. I told him he couldn't put this carb on without getting a vaccum advance distributor. Well he proved me wrong. It is on there and it runs good. No computer at all......Whats the deal?

Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good...
There is a little default advance built into the distributor, a "limp-home mode" curve. It's possible to get either the total advance at high RPMs right, or the initial advance right at idle, but not both. He's got one or the other, or somewhere in between.
If you always run above 3000 RPMs, it's possible to run okay with a CC distributor and non-CC carb. But even then, it's not optimal.
