carb/intake/air cleaner issues

if i were to run a weiand stealth and edelbrock or carter carb, what kind of air cleaner would still fit under a stock camaro hood? would the stock one fit? i would like to keep the stock one and add another snorkel or get a HO dual snorkel, or an opern element at least 3 in high. keep in mind i have the large hei distributor.

This is the subject that buggs the crap out of me. I have 2 thirgens 82 firebird 85 camaroz28. I put a stealth on the camaro when I put the 350 in it. Every drop base configuration I tryed would not clear the hood! Yes it was a very good excuse to get a cowl hood. I just did some manifold mixing this weekend. I took the stealth on my truck off and put an excellerator on it, then took the stock manifold off of the firbird and placed the stealth on it, sat the holley carb on and 14x3 drop base and it would not clear. So I just put the action+ on the firebird and it clears fine. The stealth is 4.5 inches from where it sits on the engine to where you mount the carb. I suggest that you look for something like a cardboard tube like the ones found on rolls of carpet and cut it to the sealth/carb/air cleaners height and go from there. Some people claim to be using the stealh with a stock hood but I dont see how its possible at least with the stock hoods on my cars.
Good luck!

I'm running a stealth intake with a holley carb and a 14x3 drop base K&N under a stock hood.

The stealth is the best all around manifold!
I highly reccomend stealths over all other manifolds except the xcellerator but I dont think you would want one of those

Performers and action+'s are stock replacements slightly better than stock. On a scale of 1-10 "1, being stock" I would rate the per$act+ a, 3. The steatlh would be at least an 7/8.

If you can clear the hood I highly reccomend a stealth.

i can't just go out and buy a taller hood to make the stealth clear though. by any chance, is a q-jet shorter in height from the base to air cleaner flange than an edel/carter?? i can take the q jet off of a buddies 79 z28 thats being parted out.

Well here go's: Take an int. man.(I/M)and turn it upside down on a surface plate. Measure from the surface plate to the I/M mounting sureface and you will have the spec. you will need to compare your stock I/M with aftermarket manifolds.

Example: Stock 1984 Z28 alum. intake spec's.

Front = 2.949" Rear = 4.316"

Next step is to measure the dist. from the hood to the air cleaner (A/C) with the I/M,carb and the A/C installed on the eng.
You can do this by useing silly putty (S/P). Mount ***** of S/P on the front,center,rear and both sides of the A/C and close the hood. Wait a few min.,open the hood and measure all the S/P *****.

Example: Stock intake with a 1/2" NOS plate,two gaskets stock Q-Jet carb and a drop-base 14" x 3" A/C.

Front clearance = .700" Center = 1.300" Rear = 2.300"
L/S = 1.800" R/S = 1.900"

As you can see even with an NOS plate and two gaskets (.521") there is plenty of clearance. Now lets say we want to install an Weiand Team "G" Street Ram intake. The catalog say that the front measurement is 3.50" and the rear is 4.50" We know that the stock Z28 intake front is 2.940" and the rear is 4.316" So 3.50" -2.940" = .560" The clearance between the hood and the front of the A/C is .700". So .700" -.560" = .140". This is tight but it will clear. You get the idea!!
