Holley 650 DP
Holley 650 DP
Some problems. First of all the idiot who I let finish my car while I was at college works like such a ... He put a "new" AFPR on the car. Well namely it was "used" and leaking. Thats the first problem. Second was it was a 2 port so my electric pump had a nice time pumping through that. Third, he had no way of checking the pressure. So, I think he messed my carb up. The carb was rebuilt fresh for the car, but now leaks when the car is off out of the venturies? I think thats what they are called. Problem number 2 is that there is a puddle of gas under the throttle linkage. Not huge but definately gas. What damage do you think he may have done and how do i repair it? Thanks guys.

One more thing, the car is running extremely rich. The reason i can tell is you can smell it plus above the tail pipes in the back its got the black marks on my white iroc. Could it be the jets? or am i idleing rich. Well, i guess i could be more vague. lol Thanks guys anyway. Hey anyone from around Cherry Hill NJ who knows how to set up carbs???

You need to get a fuel pressure gauge on it to see where you are at.Sounds to me like the fuel pressure is way too high along with the float levels.Lowering both should cure your problems. If that does not do it,it could also be a dirty and or stuck needle and seat but being the carb was rebuilt I would lean towards the first two things being the culprets.Check them out,I would say that is where your answer is.Where is Cherry Hill ?I could give you a hand if not too far from Clifton.let me know!

Na, i'm by philly. Thanks tho man I appreciate the offer. I just got a Holley book tonight, best 16 bucks I ever spent. Also i must say that Amazon.com is a great site.
I got the Mallory Fuel Pressure Regulator and a gauge and i'm at a steady 6 PSI. I haven't been able to mess with the carb as of yet because the brand new starter decided to take a dump on me. Gotta love cars. Thanks for the imput tho, i'm gonna try to get it up and running tomorrow because its gonna be 82 Degrees here. Talk to you fella's then.

If you are at a steady 6 psi, lower the float levels and your problems will go away.Float levels are just WAY too high.

Alright, worked on the car all day today. Got the ***** running pretty good. Got some updates on my carb.
1) the Leak under the throttle linkage is a drip from where the linkage goes into the carb, ever heard of that?
2) I have some stalling issues during hard breaking. I checked and adjusted the float levels on the front but I have yet to do the back. (don't ask me why but i didn't) . The front was fine so i'm sure the back is as well. *i'll check tomorrow tho*
3) Still idleing rich. Tried adjusting the air/fuel monitor screws. I'm going to get a vacuum gauge so i can do it right.
4) I have the idle set at 1100 but it still idles pretty rough. Is that the cam? I didn't think this cam was that radical.

To answer you in order:
1)The leak sounds like the throttle linkage hole is worn out from use, common on high mileage carbs. As far as I know there is no fix, just replacement of carb, check around.
2)I too have the same stalling issues on my Demon,no matter what the float levels are,a drawback of a carb.Anyone else have any ideas?Gladly listen!
3)Definitely use a vacuum gauge, this is how I got my car to lean out at idle, still rich because of my cam and 750 dp but much better than what I started with.Get the highest vacuum reading and then lean it out 1/4 to 1/2 turn.
4)The rough idle I would say sounds like a vacuum leak probably due to the throttle linkage hole being worn out, allowing fuel to leak along with creating a vacuum leak.Your cam is not all that big, mine is 274/284 dur 487/490 lift and I can idle at 750 rpm all day,yes lumpy, but not rough.your cam is not that much different so check for a vacuum leak.

If that isn't a kick to the nuts i don't know what is.
Eh, but i'm talking it stalls hardcore if i'm not even breaking that bad. I guess i'll attribute that the vacuum leak somewhere. HOPEFULLY its not that bad at the linkage.
Sound like i'm going the right way?
Matt
P.S. I will never buy another used carb in my life, or have someone else who i can "trust" work on my engine. People are ALL ABOUT money, it really is ashame.
Edit: and ESPECIALLY the people i DON"T trust!

OneZ,
Thanks for all your answers you've been alot of help. I'm going to look for that vacuum leak today after work (good ole carb cleaner really does the trick). I have a couple more questions for you about your car since we have almost identical cams.
What size carb are you running and do you have anything else done to the engine? (Intrested in the carb cfm due to the fact that i guess i'm going to have to buy a new carb soon).
Where do you think your HP and 1/4 times are with this combo?

I have a Speed Demon 750cfm Mechanical secondaries carb.I have Manley forged 10:1 compression pistons(.030 over),4340 steel crank & rods,AFR 195 (64cc) heads,Weiand Stealth dual plane intake,HEI and MSD 6AL box,Comp xtreme energy 274 cam,1.5 comp pro magnum roller rockers, and SLP 1 3/4 headers into a Flowmaster 3" single exhaust(no cat).I would like to say I am somewhere around 400-420 horse but I never dyno'ed so I can't give exact numbers, just a guess.I have ran mid to high 12 second cars on the street and won,so I would love to see at least a 12.50 out of the car.I have yet to be to the track this year..new job,new house, new girl=no time to go to track.Car is very fast though.I would recommend you get a Performer RPM intake (or dual plane of your choice) and a 750 vacuum secondary carb(Holley or Demon, both have their faithful) for your car, much better matched to your engine. The Torker is a high RPM intake, like 3,000 to 7,500,way higher powerband than your combo has, yours is much closer to Performer RPM powerband.

Well dude lets go over how your not messing around at all with that engine! Impressive to say the least.
I'm gonna start saving up for the 750cfm carb and then from there i'm going to start looking into a new set of heads. Probably vortec and at that time i'll get the intake manifold. Do you think I should get a lower stall convertor as well? I kinda got stuck with that one... its a long story.. but its pretty high ... 3000.. Ehh killer on gas mileage. Give me your advice.

What gears are you running?I would suggest staying with that stall, when we get that motor set up it will be perfect,HEHE!

Onebad, Found a great deal on a carb tonight off of a running engine. No leaks, no leaking venturies, and duel feed. its model number 4777-4. Holley 650 DP with Mechanical Secondaries.
This carb is much more fresh then the last one, namely its not beat to hell. 2 questions:
Can i switch the gas line to the drivers side? Former TPI car (gas lines running down drivers side with AFPR)
What is the optimal pressure to use for the carb?
Are you a fan of mechanical secondaries?
Oh and i have 2.77 gears in the back. Not too bad for highway use.

Sounds like a good deal.I would say to hook up this carb how you had the last one set up. There is no way that I know of to change the fuel inlet on the float bowls to the driver side, just hook it up as you had it.Only way I know of to change it is to reroute fuel lines under car to passenger side frame rail, had a friend do it on his 86 Z TPI when he went to carb.pain in the a$$ he said.I would set your pressure at 5.5 to 6 psi.Start low and if you run out of fuel at WOT,raise it.I generally run mech secondaries on stick and vacuum secondaries on auto, but that is not to say you can switch it around. You will be ok.2.77 are good for highway but not for what you are after, start looking into 3.55 to 3.73 gears.HEHE,we'll get you moving yet.
