Good golly guys. That is an interesting post, but to offer you good help I (we) need details. Exactly which pump did you end up with? Where was the fuel pump mounted on the car? Does the fuel pump run hot, does it sound like its running as a fast whirl or a slow grinding noise? I have had many problems with the Holley pumps, including having the magnets come off in the motor. When that happens the pump spins very slowly or doesn't spin at all. Not many carb pumps have return lines. It would be a nice feature to help keep the fuel cool but everything should still work without a return line. You need to first check to see if the pump is working right and if its getting fuel to it. You can't pump fuel if there is no fuel there to pump. If the fuel pump is out of the car you can try testing it with a little water. Put a piece of hose on the in and out connectors. Put the in hose in a bucket of water. Hook a battery to the pump with a pair of jumper cables. In a second or two water should pour out of the out hose. When it does unhook the motor. You don't want to pump a ton of water with it, just enough to see if it works.

Mechanical pumps don't tend to make whiring noises, or do much of anything when you hook them up to a battery...
well its a mechanical pump not an eletric pump. so i cant really test it out. but like when my brother had it hooked up when the car was runnin it would make a loud clickin noise, i dunno if thats good or not. but like when he had the stock pump on the clear fuel filter would be full but with the holley it would be like half full with alittle bit of bubbles. i think the part number for it is like 12-834 or sumthing like that. but could i rig a way to still use the return line to it or no. and would that give me enuff fuel pressure to run my Nos right and not screw things up.

i too have the 12-834 holley fuel pump as the suggested in the chp magazine for my 87 z. it doesnt have a return fitting, you guys say that its only necessary for cooling down gasoline? as it is my car isnt smog legal anymore for the time being and id like to try this new pump out.

You can't just t-in a return line to the output line. You will have little or no pressure, because the return line runs straight to the tank without restriction. If you want to use the return line with that pump, get a pressure regulator with a return line provision. Excess pressure will go to the return line. The return line is to reduce pressure(and can help with vapor lock). That being said, a carb needs enough volume to sustain the maximum fuel flow your engine needs. The only part a carb that has pressure is the needle and seat.
