problem with running rich

I've tryed everything I can think of to get a leaner fuel mix on my carb. I have the smallest jets and very big rods in atm and the car still slobbers fuel. if the day is hot, it gets worse.

I have an a/f ratio guage and it never leaves extreme rich unless I let off on the gas and engine brake.

I have an open element cleaner, could all that hot air in the engine bay cause it to run rich?

my spark plugs show a dark grey color. perhaps my plugs are a wrong heat range??? not enough gap?? it's .045 atm.

any ideas?

I'm convince there's more power to be found (if not gas mileage)
with better tuning.

It might just need a rebuild.

It's less than 2 years old...

get this, I tryed changing the idle mix according to my a/f guage.
if I move it into stoich on the guage, the car runs like ****. It idles best with the guage pegged on full rich.

I pulled the plugs after idling and they are now a deep brown

when I've been driving it hard it shows dark to light grey..

I think I'm just gonna try another carb and see if it's the carb doing all this...

Any other ideas?

Its possible that you have a vacuum leak that is affecting your mixture, or your timing could be off that would affect the running at ideal mixture.

I'm just guessing, but its something to think about.
