305 or 350? help please!!!
how can i tell the difference between a 305 and a 350?-just bought an 82 t/a and the guy said it had a 350 but how can i tell?-want to rebuild the engine but dont know how to tell which it is-also how stong are the 200 trannys?-is the 700 just a bolt in process or is there more to it than that?-ok heres another one my distributor has a vacuum advance canister but the sensors are still hooked up to the carb so all i need to do is swap a non cc carb and i should be ready to go right? thanks guys
Take a look at the casting numbers on the block, and use Mortec.com for all your casting number needs. This includes any cylinder head ID questions you may need answered.
More than likely, it'll be a 305. You couldn't get a 350 stock in 82, and sellers like to lie.

A quick way to tell is to look at the Harmonic Balancer. A 305 has a short thick one and a 350 has a talller skinny one, at least I think this is right, anyone else know the specifics on this?....

Balancers are interchangeable. You can't tell that way.
Like the other post said, the only thing that doesn't lie is the block casting #. You can't make a 305 block into a 350, or vice-versa.
Like the other post said, get your block casting number (behind the driver's side head, on top of the bell housing flange.... clearly the easiest place on the whole car to read a number from) and look it up.
