Idle Mixture, screws in or out
I have a Holley list 4779 on the below listed engine. I finally got the exhaust on, and it still idles real rich. I expected this form the backpressure the exhaust created. I have screwed the primary mixture screws all the way in, and the secondaries are 1/2 turn out. If I run them in the cars runs real rough. The specs on the carb are: 67/74 jets, 31/32 nozzles, 6.5 power valve. I don't remember what color the pump cams are, but they are set on the #2 hole. The #1 hole gave a bad hesitation. After I put the primary side all the way in, the black smoke from the exhaust was less visible, but the smoke from behind the car was still there. The power valve is new. I had it running like a top before the exhuast, and after 110 gas. Is this going to require holes in the butterflys? The transfer slot has about 1/16 or so showing. Anyone have any ideas how to lean it out somemore? Or am I setting up the carb all wrong? Any help. good or bad whould be appreciated. Well, except the "Go out and buy the Holley book." I will do that in a few weeks.
Thanks,

Sure, I guess that would help wouldn't it?! I ran them all out 1.5 turns to get a start. I messed with the timing a little to get it to smooth out a little. Then I screwwed each one in until the car ran rough, then backed it out until it smoothed out again. I did this on each, and they are all 1/2 turn out now. This of course tells me that the timing did it, as now there is no smoke at all from the pipe, and the gas smell is now minimal. I am running 110 octane though, so the smell is the best in the world. That is up to the point of getting a headache. I did pick up a complete jet kit today, so I will be messing with the jets this weekend. I think I have a lean miss about 3000rpm.
